of the following concepts and use

Third World
• Origins
• The French demographer Alfred Sauvy coined the
expression (“tiers monde” in French) in 1952 by
analogy with the “third estate,” the commoners of
France before and after the French Revolution
• Like the third estate, Sauvy argues that the Third World is nothing, and it „wants to be something‟
• The term implies that the Third World is exploited much
as the third estate was exploited
• The term Third World was used at the 1955 conference
of Afro-Asian countries held in Bandung, Indonesia
• By the end of the 1950‟s the term was frequently used
in the French media to refer to the underdeveloped
countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America

Characteristics of the Third World
•The underdevelopment of the Third World is marked
by a number of common characteristics:
Colonialism, high population growth,
diseases, traditional, rural structures
widespread poverty
 famine, droughts, wars
unstable governments

Examples of Third World countries

• (Africa, Latin America and south Asia)

Zambia,
Zimbabwe,
Botswana,
India
Brazil

NORTH

• These are the rich (developed) countries
• Although most nations comprising the
North are in fact located in the Northern
hemisphere, the divide is not primarily
defined by geographical location
• The North mostly covers the West and the
First World

Characteristics of countries in the North

• Good infrastructure, high literacy rate, good housing, high employment rate, and so on
• Examples of countries in the North
• USA, Canada, France, Switzerland, Australia, Britain and so on

SOUTH

• Poorer developing/ least developing countries
• These are the countries that fall within the Third
World
• Its characteristics and examples are the same with
those of the Third World

Development
• What is development and when did the
term come into use?
• What happened after 1945 up to the 1990s
in terms of development?
• What is the new interpretation after 1990
• Is development equal?
• What does development entail? Does it involve;
Democracy, positive change, new technology,
modern infrastructure?
• Does development mean the same to everyone?

ASSIGNMENT 3
Write an essay on development indicators
in which you:
• Describe GNP, child (under-five) mortality
rates and HDI as development indicators
that may be used to explain levels of
development within countries
• Explain
the
advantages
and
disadvantages of each of these indicators.

DEVELOPMENT VARIATIONS
Development is uneven in the world due to;
Economic stagnation/booming
Industrialisation, education
Political stability/instability
Debt
Natural disasters or health pandemics
• Development indicators are used to explain
development levels

GNP : GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT
• GNP measures a country’s “wealth”
• It is the total value of economic output, from
what is grown, made and sold by its people
• GNP is measured in monetary terms
• The World Bank uses this indicator to measure a
country’s wealth and categorise it as
developed/developing

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES

• It’s a useful tool for creating
economic policies
• Helps to understand the
economies of different
countries
• It’s easy to understand
• brings more clarity to why
countries are said to be
developed or developing

DISADVANTAGES

• “Money isn’t everything”
• It does not show inequality within
countries
• It does not measure wealth
generated from the informal
economy...
