Dunkin Donuts: A Short Story
It was the day after Thanksgiving when I woke up. It was like it always was when I woke up, my mom and my younger brother downstairs first, and my dad and older brother upstairs. This time we had family friends, exhausted from the 8 hour drive from D.C. who were obviously still sleeping. There was only one person from the group that I enjoyed talking to and that was Ian. Although my family and friends that were staying were already full from the previous meal, my mom decided to bring in donuts from Dunkin Donuts.
“Peter, I’m thinking about us going to Acadia National Park in Maine for a day or two, what do you think?”
“I don’t know, mom, I guess.”
She then asked my brother who seemed pretty excited about it. I ate half my breakfast before

It was a crisp spring day the birds were chirping and the bugs were buzzing and my brother and I, at the age of 10, were playing around in the backyard of our house. All we were doing was just playing around in the backyard having a fun time being normal children as always. Then I came up with this perfect idea to play hockey because since we all love hockey. So we wouldn't work garage I got a plastic baseball bat and my brother got a wooden baseball bat plus a whiffle ball.…

It is a cool, crisp fall morning in October. It is early, as my coach always wants to arrive at our cross country meets first. He seems to think there's a direct link to when you get to the meet and where your team places. In my opinion, the only direct link is between the earlier we have to get up and the size of the coffee we each get at Dunkin Donuts. My teammates, excited about the day ahead of them, feverishly exchange “Secret buddy” gifts, and pass around the purple war paint, ready to face the day ahead.…

An exclusive use clause is a valuable and often negotiated provision in leases. An “exclusive” prohibits a landlord from leasing space to another tenant that will operate a similar business or sell similar products. For example, a gym tenant may seek an exclusive to prevent the landlord from leasing space to other gyms, or a donut shop may seek an exclusive to prevent another tenant from selling baked goods for on or off premises consumption. Consider the following tips when negotiating an exclusive use provision on behalf of a landlord or tenant.…

It was my first all-nighter with my church youth group. It was the night I discovered I had hypoglycemia. I was so worried that I would fall asleep and not be able to stay awake through the night. I was only in 7th grade and wanted to stay up and prove myself to all of the older kids. I drank a Monster and ate a bunch of candy and sweets to stay awake. I had a major sugar high. Then, at about 3 am I crashed. I was nauseous and all I wanted to do was sleep. I had had no protein or any food of substance the whole night, which affected my blood sugar. I ended up having someone drive me home and I went to sleep. I was extremely exhausted, but, like the article said, it was a rough night’s sleep. I kept on waking up through the night. I then found out the next week that I had hypoglycemia and now I know how to manage it.…

But then my girlfriend and I were sitting with our feet in the pool ankle deep. We were talking about our parent’s divorce. At the time it was just over a year that my parents got divorced so it was fresh like a cut. Hard to even think about, yet there I was talking about it. It started to rain lightly. So we moved to the steps outside the restaurant where we wouldn’t get hit by the rain. The restaurant was still open so I got the best coffee I have ever had. Slowly drinking it as if it was my…

I remember the day clearer than any other. I was in 5th grade. My mom sat me down and told me my father would be living in another home. They called it “temporary.” “It will end” “It is not divorce”, they said. This, age nine, is when the constant packing, unpacking and swapping from house to house began. This lasted about a year until my Dad moved back in. We were whole, again. That was the happiest month I can really remember. Having two parents say goodnight to me, not having to repeat each story twice, and meals with someone at each head of the table. Everything was perfect. Until we decided to all go out to a family dinner. At this dinner my parents dropped one word.…
