Dunk By David Lubar Analysis
Stories can be analyzed using literary elements. In the story, Dunk the author David Lubar uses the literary elements of setting which are time, place, and atmosphere. The setting of Dunk can be described through time. This story takes place in the summer. School just ended for many of the kids. One of the main characters Jason and Chad just finished tenth grade. There are lots of people splashing int the warm water and soaking up the sun. In addition to time, the place can also describe the setting. One of the main places this story takes place is on the boardwalk on the New Jersey Shore. In the summer, it becomes an amusement park. Like dunking the bozo by throwing a baseball at them, and the cat-a-pult game with Chads good friend Gwen worked at. One of the main characters Chad worked at the bozo tank on the boardwalk in the summer. As well as the boardwalk another place Chad would spend lots of time was in the hospital. When Jason got sick with a chronic autoimmune disorder Chad was always visiting him and trying to cheer him up. Jason is in the hospital for about 3 weeks. Then at the end of the story Jason end up getting better just in time for the end of summer. Not only can the setting of the story be described through time and place but as well as through the atmosphere. In the begging of the story, there is a negative atmosphere. Chad is not happy that there is going to be a new lieutenant moving upstairs of their house which they rent out. When he gets accused of stealing on the boardwalk one day the police ask a bystander if Chad is guilty and the bystander didn't stand up for chad and chad gets very angry.
