It seized me once again. The only reason I went on was to be with my young family. My wife is the most extraordinary and loving woman in the world - only equaled by my beautiful children. Before this event took place, we were a normal and hopeful family, just starting out, enjoying our small fixed-up home. Everything was ideal; everything a dream. Friends and family complimented us on our lovely home. And it was a home, not just a house. It was a lovely home because of the love, joy and peace that filled the walls of our lives. The reality of these virtues spilled over as we spent time playing and reading. As soon as our children were able to sit upright, they learned how to turn pages of books. They always wanted to read “just one more time.” And I never had a problem reading a book, six or seven times in one sitting, particularly if it was Dr. Seuss. To save a trip home from the pool, my mom packed delicious lunches and plentiful snacks. The pool had a slide, a deep-end and a shallow kiddy area. Carefully watching the pool, doubled as a life guard, the park manager ran tests for deep-end admission. My whole life’s goal was to swim in the big kid side. I have fond childhood memories of our home. But when middle school began, I soon discovered kids say terrible things when you live in a trailer. I quickly learned to speak in generalities about my house and how avoid the subject altogether. I’ll never forget when Tom made jokes about us kids who lived in trailers, and then turned to me, “Where do you live Rick?” I just said something like, “Oh, just off _____ Road.” There was great relief when he didn’t ask a follow-up question. When I became old enough to drive, I often passed by sprawling subdivisions with massive homes. I would turn off into these neighborhoods, driving, looking, dreaming. By high school graduation, my dreams turned into determination and confidence. The odds were against me, but I knew one day my goal would come
