Drum Major
I am applying for both section leader and drum major because I have a lot to offer in both positions in the band. I am a great leader, with a lot of maturity and know when it’s time to be serious, and when it’s time to joke around. Every day, I grow more and more with this band and leading this band as drum major, or leading the saxophones as section leader, would be an amazing accomplishment for me and I know I can do the job well.
First of all, I will be putting all of my heart into this job, I’ve been in band for seven years, and I have grown with this band for two years. I know the band can reach new heights if we work hard enough. With all the changes we are making next year, we are going to need strong leaders to aid the incoming freshman and to lead the entire band throughout the year. As drum major, conducting requires a certain kind of insight and an understanding of music, which is something that I have started to develop during my seven years of playing an instrument. Addition to my experience with music as a whole, I also have three years of marching band experience.
Second, I am determined to succeed, and to improve myself and the band as a whole. It’s not good enough to be satisfactory, I want to exceed expectations. I believe in hard work, and never giving up; I believe in making a little improvement every day, because there’s ALWAYS room for improvement. We had an amazing year this year, getting two superiors, but we can’t just rest. We have to keep working, thrive to be the best we can be. I want to be that person to lead this band, and push them to be the best.
Lastly, my philosophy on leadership is simple: lead by example, always help, and never quit. Quitting is out of the question for me. Using excuses instead of giving your best, giving up on something (or someone), or abandoning your responsibilities are things I absolutely do not believe in. Promoting excellence in others starts with promoting it in yourself. I have found from being in

Holding the office of drum major in a marching band is a very strenuous duty. Most individuals consider drum majors to be the face and entertainment of the band, specifically with show style marching bands. However, the role of a drum major demands a more imperative trait that separates incompetent drum majors from exceptional drum majors. The trait of leadership is a superior factor in the character of a drum major. Leadership is not equivalent to control, however, leadership is a form of serving the followers who are in need of guidance. This ultimately means that the leader is responsible for maintaining the followers in a standard of excellence. Being drum major molded me into understanding my characteristics as a leader. I consciously prepared myself for the position…

The meaning of seize is to grasp suddenly and forcibly. Sometimes when an opportunity has fallen into my lap, I might think about it too much until the opportunity has passed me by. In order to practice this principle I would need to be more assertive. If I increase my self-confidence, it would help in me being more assertive. Sometimes I do not feel so sure of myself and I’m afraid that I might make mistakes. I would need to learn how to accept mistakes and not to be too hard on myself. Making mistakes is apart of life and apart of learning. I would also have to realize that a lot of the negative thoughts that are swirling in my head are not facts. Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy and talk myself out of a lot of great opportunities just because it might be a little risky. Later I would have to ask myself: would I rather have tried and failed, or never try and wonder, “What if?” It’s just best to seize the opportunity. So if there is an opportunity…

Leadership is defined as ‘the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal’. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. Therefore for a person to be a successful leader they need to work hard to accomplish their goal and influence others to do the same. For greatest success and communication with their hierarchy they must be trustworthy and responsible. In addition, the person needs to be nice and approachable so that they can interact with others and are as approachable as possible. Although a leader must be approachable they still need to discipline their group or section in appropriate ways so that they may show respect and pride for the band. Outside of the marching field or classroom a leader needs to maintain integrity, work hard, stay away from bad habits and represent themselves and Leon Band to the best of their ability.…

One will understand that they must be patient with their fellow peers, for the reason that some people might struggle with marching, or memorize their music slower than others. One must learn that respect is not given, but earned. Just because a drum major has more authority than a regular ole’ trombone player, does not mean they will receive respect from that trombone player right away. One will gain integrity; being a drum major requires an individual to work with fellow band members and treat everyone fairly while keeping in mind moral virtues. And last but not least, most importantly, one must learn how to roll with the punches. Whether the band gets off tempo during show, somebody loses their drill, the metronome dies and needs new batteries right at that moment, or even when the director doesn’t have a key to the band tower and needs somebody to run inside and get one, learning how to handle tough situations in a orderly manner is essential. A drum major is someone the band considers a role model, and if they are stressed out, or blowing each circumstance out of proportion, they will lose respect from their peers. That individual will not be considered principled, but amoral.…

Being a leader for a large group means more than just a title. As co-drum major of my high school marching band, I had to use leadership to help the group has had to overcome. The title bears numerous responsibilities and in various styles, but choosing to lead by example while having a sense of humor has shown as the most effective way of leading for me. Performing as a marching band requires lots of dedication and hard work; however, when the group starts lacking in motivation to progress, a leader must step in. For the group to overcome these issues,we had to get together and discuss what was keeping the group from progressing. Leading by example is not enough for a group to follow, sometimes it requires actual action as well. I use my sense…

Since I have been in this band, I have grown as a musician learning to read treble clef from playing baritone and also from guitar. This allows me to be able to read every sections music. I believe this is a great help because when each group breaks apart and does sectionals I would be able to help out every instrument no matter what clef they play in. I cannot wait to guide the new band members, freshman, in their first season of marching band. I will also bring plenty of fun and character to the band. Though my job isn't fun and games I believe in having a good time at all times even while learning and working. That's…

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a drum major is defined simply as “the leader of a marching band.” However, I think that the drum major is more than just a leader. He is the image, the personality, and the character of the band as a whole. I believe I have the ability, charisma, and leadership qualities to fill this honorable position. I pride myself on being an honest, confident, and reliable person. Next year will be my fourth year in the band and I have always made my best effort to be on time, to support others, and be enthusiastic about everything I do no matter how difficult it is. Most importantly, an outstanding leader is not scared of admitting that they have made a mistake. This takes a great amount of maturity and responsibility, and I have always made that a very important aspect of my life. Another very important skill of a leader I have is courage, because it implies so much. Being decisive requires courage, because as a leader you cannot be afraid to fail but wholeheartedly support their own opinions, and not be fearful of suggesting a new approach at some situations.I am not perfect but picking me as the drum major for Warren Easton Fighting Eagles Marching Band would be a fantastic experience for me, and I would really love to dedicate myself to a program that I already hold dear to my heart, and remember for the rest of my life.…

My leadership style is best described as a funnel. My aim in leading others is not to conduct every single individual, but to guide everyone to work towards the same central goal. I believe it is best to let others bring their own unique abilities to the table and use them to accomplish the task at hand. One of my most memorable experiences as a leader was leading my school’s student section. When I came into high school, school spirit was a joke. At games, everyone sat and no one said a thing. I decided that needed to change. My fellow students didn’t want change. They told my friends and I to sit down and shut up. I kept standing, I yelled louder, and kept going. Eventually, I started a spark. By the end of my freshman year there were a group…

    Cheer Captain

There are many different opinions out there about cheerleaders, many good, and some bad. Some think of them as the girls standing by the football field, but I think of cheerleading as a symbol of all the spirit that we can share, and a token of appreciation toward the team that’s being cheered on. Cheerleading is such a vital part to many sections of the school. If I was chosen to be a captain for the 2013-2014 year, not only would I make sure that any negative opinions were squashed, but the great qualities the squad holds, are emphasized. I have come along way since i started cheerleading. I remember my first day of cheer and how nervous I was to be trying something I’ve never done before, and how inexperienced I was. Throughout the season, I’ve always worked my hardest to pick up new dances, stunts, and cheers right away. Since most of the new girls joining cheer this year have never done cheer before, I find it a privilege to help them grow to become the best they can be athletically, and with their attitudes. I think an important quality of being a captain is always, always, including everyone! I feel like i dedicated my time to be the best cheerleader i can be and also the best person i can be for myself and i have accomplished it, but im not finished yet. I learn new things everyday, you learn in the process. I want the new girls to be the best they can be, i think i can really help them. Actually, i know i can. It's super hard to be confident and i learned that but i built up my confidence i want these girls to experience their first year of cheer and be like "wow". I've discovered myself in so many ways, i want the new team to do so as well. Cheeleading is something im very passionate about and i just want the world to know that. I know my schedule for the next school year will be a problem considering i might not be able to have cheer sixth period, but i will try my hardest to work something out. I need a chance. I…

During my junior year I was the section leader for the Alto Saxophones, and I went on to become drum major the next year. I attended a drum major camp to learn how to correctly and efficiently lead the band. Along with the help of the section leaders and the other drum major, we lead the band to learn more sets and music than we had ever done in the past. By the end the that performance at the SVVSD Band Night we had practiced the non-stop eight minutes of music more than some would have liked to. No matter how well we performed, I was happy to have seen the band come so far since the beginning. The band has given me so much since my first day of camp freshmen year. I have come out of my shell, and found peace from everyday stress as well as a new family to rely on. When I joined the band after that last performance, I was so grateful for the opportunity to have been drum major and I knew that we were…

My name is Kaleigh Gonzales I’m a 15 year old sophomore and I’m running for the 2014-2015 officer position of reporter for Armwood High Schools FFA Chapter. I feel I should be selected for this position because not only am I a people person but I am also extremely organized. I think this would make me be able to effectively and efficiently get the Armwood FFA’s chapter name known to the public. I would also try to do this by doing any and all public service projects we can get our hands on, then publishing our successes. I believe that to make a difference you have to be known and respected by the community around you. In the past three years I have served as Vice President for Burnett Middle School for two terms and Treasurer for Armwood high school for one term. In this time I’ve competed many events including forestry, land judging, vet assisting, OCC, creed speaking, and extemporaneous public speaking. By doing this I’ve gained lots of experience and love in our great organization. I believe to be this year’s reporter I have to not only work on our clubs public media aspects but also work hard in competitions to win and better our chapters’ reputation. If I were to describe the technique in which I lead I would have to say that I plan , I tell others my plan , and then I depend on my team to help me. They tell me where they specialize in and what they want to do for me, and we work form there. I try to let people do what makes them happy while still helping me. I can make a personal promise that I will always work my hardest to make FFA my top priority, a position like this requires my full attention. My other activity I engage in is that I am a First sergeant of alpha company in JROTC, this means I am the second in command of one of three company’s in our schools only JROTC battalion. I promise that my responsibilities there will not interfere with my responsibilities regarding FFA. Some activities I want to do this year are competitions like OCC and…

I’ve given my all in everything I do and demonstrated while participating in other extracurricular activities. I’m a strong speaker and I always do what I am told. I believe I have the qualifications needed to be captain for the 2010-2011 color guard season(s). I know I’ve had the experience in leading a group like this and not only have I led the guard out into a performance I’ve also taken charge in most of my extracurricular activities I’ve stage managed performances, helped in properties, and ran sound for my previous theater arts/choir performances so taking charge really won’t be something new me. I’ve learned from my previous experience, which have helped me surpass my challenges in now a day situations.…

Being in the Collingswood HS Marching Band for five years has put me in the position of being an example to the younger members. I have learned that patience, and perseverance are valued qualities in a leader. When helping a new member of my section in the band this year, I had to be patient with her so that she would be able to be able to contribute positively to the performance. Also, when time management between school, band, and other responsibilities have weighed heavily on me, I have…
