Drug and substance abuse has become a disaster and an issue to be addressed urgently worldwide. In Kenya, drug abuse is one of the major problems alongside poverty, corruption and HIV/AIDS. However, whereas the HIV/AIDS prevalence is coming down, drugs and substance abuse is on the increase compounded by lack of a traditional control system and frustration arising from unemployment, idleness and poverty. WHY SUBSTANCE AND DRUG ABUSE IS AN ISSUE OF CONCERN.
Since the issue of drug abuse came into existence, a lot of measures to curb its spread have been put into place not only in Kenya but worldwide. In Kenya, a lot f money has been spend so far to curb its spread. So many rehabilitation centers have been put in place to counsel the drug addicts; subjects, courses and units covering drug abuse education have been introduced to schools starting from primary, secondary schools and institutions of higher learning like colleges. Polytechniques and universities. The government has enforced laws which ban the use of illegal drugs and their trade in Kenya. Drug trafficking is a serious crime in Kenya and if found guilty there are severe penalties and heavy fines. Christians are strongly against drug abuse and it is against Christian morals and ethics. And with all these in place everyone expects drug abuse to go down but that is not the case; contrary to that the abuse of drugs is highly increasing like fire on a ready-sorghum plantation. People are taking and sniffing substances and drugs despite them knowing of the hazardous effects that these drugs come along with thus this is puzzling. So many people ranging from teenagers, middle-aged, the old, the rich and the poor, religious and non-religious are all getting involved in drug and substance abuse despite all the measures in place t curb its spread thus this makes drug and substance abuse alarming and puzzling issue which calls for thorough scrutiny into the matter.
