Drowning-Personal Narrative
It happened all so suddenly that i didn’t even realize what was happening. I was drowning. Don’t ask me why I was or how my friend persuaded me to do it but somehow, I was drowning. It was so dark and so vague that it’s hard to remember but somehow i do and I’m going to share that experience with you. It began with a simple text. I was listening to music at the time and all of a sudden i heard the sound of my phone vibrating against the table. I instantly picked it up to read it. It was my friend Nick. He asked how i was and if i wanted to go swimming. I replied, sure, but give me a few minutes. I rushed upstairs to grab my swimming trunks from my bedroom, not even noticing the dinner that was being cooked on the stove. I ran towards my bedroom …show more content…
The water was freezing cold at first but it gradually improved. When i reached the dock my friend instantly said, “Hey, want to go jello diving?” I must have looked at him with one of the funniest and dumbest faces he has ever seen because he instantly bursted out laughing. “What?” I asked. “Jello diving. The bottom of this lake has two to four feet in depth of thick, gooey muck that feels like jello.” “Sure,” I replied, “But I’m not the greatest at diving. I’m not even sure if I know how to dive.” After a brief demonstration on diving i tried it out myself. It looked so simple but didn’t turn out to be. As i dove in my legs and back curled and smacked against the water. My back tensed up and my legs seized into one position with no movement. This only lasted about five seconds though. I crawled my way back up onto the dock. When i got up there my friend asked me if I was ok while trying to hold back a laugh. I turned around to show him my bruised back. “Oh my gosh. Are you ok. That looks really painful.” “It is,” I replied with what little breath I had. I decided I would jump in instead of dive. My first attempt i completely failed because i was paranoid that I was going to go too deep and then I wouldn’t be

Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. When you're a kid you would never think of almost dying at sesame place, but that's exactly what happened to me. As my family and I entered the park, my eyes grew with amazement as I looked around me. There were zooming roller coasters, families laughing, toddlers running around with a sugar high from all the cotton candy they ate, and especially the terrifying, enormous, gray and blue water slide, I looked at the slide with fear and excitement in my eyes. I knew right then and there that I was going to go on that slide no matter the consequences.…

We were ready. Paddles in hand, canoe by our side, personal floatation devices, knee pads, and cameras. The afternoon sun shined on the lake, reflecting it across the calm waters. Crowds of people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon on North Beach at Devil’s Lake State Park. Young children stumbled on the moist sand and shallow waters as they tried to catch tadpoles with their small buckets. Soothing, a gentle breeze passed by as we walked towards the edge of Devil’s Lake. Marveling at the majestic mountain of cedars around the lake and smelling the damp sand, my dad, little sister, and I were all set to take on our first wilderness inquiry; canoeing across a lake. It was safe to say that we were in for an exciting adventure…

For my conclusion I will write about the differences between people drowning in freshwater compared to people drowning in saltwater. When someone drowns it means that their lungs (respiratory system) has been blocked from receiving oxygen by a liquid. Majority of the time it is water that people drown in. “Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury related deaths” (MedicineNet). Water is the most common way that people drown, but the two types of water that is common to Earth in masses are freshwater and saltwater. Both can drown you but in completely difference ways.…

Singer’s allegory of the drowning child poses a complicated battle between morals and selfishness. His point that one is morally obligated to save the lives of others puts conflict in their mind. Of course someone will save a drowning child thrown into their path, but whether or not they go out of their way to find the child to save them is entirely different. Singer needs to first recognize where moral obligations come from in order to properly assess what they accomplish. I am morally obligated to go out of my way to help charities, and do, but not everyone else is.…

Drowsy and distracted is a recipe for disaster when you are floating aimlessly in the Atlantic Ocean. You are responsible for making sure you do not drift off into the endless void. I will admit that I sometimes find it hard to stay awake during an early morning class but that is nothing compared to the focus it takes to not nod off as the soothing swells rock your inner tube. My friend, Tiffany and I luckily had the foresight to tie our inner tubes together as to not stray from each other but had no plans for what to do if we strayed from all land in general.…

My heavy eyes ached as I closed them listening to music. I was nearly asleep when the song I was listening to paused and my familiar message tone sounded through my headphones. I picked up my phone just as the song faded back in, my eyes blurred as they adjusted to the light of my phone screen but the only thing I could see was Josie’s name. I sat up in shock and re-read the sender name a few times before believing it. I opened the message and started reading. ‘I’ve missed you so much Jacob, this is so hard and everything I do reminds me of you, I really want to see you again.’ I stared at it for a moment in shock before a huge wave of emotion came over me. I kept reading it over and over thinking I must be in a dream. I didn’t know what to do or say. My mind was soon crowded with thoughts and suddenly I felt wide awake. Every day that passed I thought how I wished I was good enough to be with her, because in reality I wasn’t over Josie and I really missed what we had. When I did reply I wrote ‘I need you in my life Josie, I can’t bear not having you next to me anymore, I miss your company and want to see you’ I pressed send and anxiously waited for a reply. I heard another buzz so I picked up my phone. ‘Meet me at Subway at 12’ she said.…

After we were all on the boat we had to go through a beautiful inlet that lead out into the ocean. We were then instructed on how put our life jackets and harnesses on. The instructor decided that I was going to be the first one to go up in the air. I made my way to the front of the boat and sat down on the deck so he could hook the parachute to my harness. Without a warning he let the parachute go and then I was ascending up into the air almost felt like the speed of light! As I was going up, he shook the line to scare me. Finally when I reached 500 feet, I could see the shore line. It was a breath taking view. I could see giant sea turtles and I even saw a shark. I was in the air about 30 minutes. Then I started descending down. When I was close to the boat, he dunked me into the same water where I had just moments earlier seen the shark and the sea turtles.…

Drowning, also defined as a respiratory impairment caused by being in or under a liquid, restrains one’s intake of oxygen. The lack of oxygen prevented from being distributed throughout the body causes it to slowly shut down then the victim will eventually go unconscious and sometimes die. Although drowning restricts one’s breathing, drowning in freshwater, and drowning in salt water will react in the body in two completely different ways (Helmenstine, “Drowning in Freshwater).…
