Driving Miss Daisy

Driving Miss Daisy, (1989) a screen play by Alfred Uhry and directed by Bruce Beresford, takes place in post-World War II Atlanta, Georgia. The main character of the movie is Miss Daisy Werthan, a Jewish widow in her seventies. The movie begins with her putting her car into the wrong gear, and going in reverse into her neighbor’s yard. Thus, her son, Boolie Werthan, believes that no insurance companies would want to insure her after this incident. At his business, Werthan Industries, he runs across a man by the name of Hoke Colborn, who is an older black man with a lot of driving experience. He used to drive for the Dairy Center, as well as the popular Judge Stone. After Hoke shows his handiness by helping some of Mr. Werthan’s workers get out of an elevator that they were stuck in, Boolie offers Hoke the job of driving his mother around. Hoke accepts this job, but has no idea what he is getting himself into. When he arrives at Miss Daisy’s house with Mr. Werthan, Miss Daisy’s maid, Idella, even says something along the lines of, “I wouldn’t take that job even if God came down to Earth himself and asked me to!” For a significant amount of time after Hoke becomes Miss Daisy’s driver, she is very rude to him and it is not a hard task to realize that she is prejudice. She would get mad at Hoke for even speaking with Idella, or looking at her family pictures on the walls, or even trying to attend to her garden. She felt that he had no business meddling with any of those things, and she would not even let Hoke drive for her at first. Miss Daisy actually began to walk to the Piggly Wiggly store instead of accepting a ride from Hoke, but Hoke drove the car next to her on the sidewalk until she finally gave in and got in the car. She immediately began to criticize his driving and tell him he was going in the wrong direction, even though he was going the speed limit and taking a shorter route to the Piggly Wiggly. In
