Driving Age Persuasive Speech
When you are driving do you think about who all is around you? The age of those people, how much experience they have behind the wheel? Many of us don’t, and this has lead to the continued rise of motor vehicle accidents involving teenagers and young adults. We talk of ways in which to reduce the accident rates we see developing in our current day society due to car accidents, and most of them are continually rejected. One of the first and least popular idea is raising the driving age from 16 to 18 years of age. This mainly is due to the lack of decision making in the teenage brain at the age of 16, causing wrecks due to slow and indecisive decision making. Another solution to this problem is the ban of cellphone use while behind the wheel.

    Teenagers have a very hard time “multitasking” while driving, posing more of a hazard when the roads (Zernike). While teens try to multitask and try to do different things while driving and not have full attention on the road, that is when an accident happen. The sad part is that they hurt themselves and even innocent people who were driving and being responsible. “studies have shown that teens tend to overrate their driving skills and underrate risk on the road” (McClatchy). Teenagers when they are driving and find it so easy to pick up a phone call or even send a quick text but don't think of how quickly accidents can happen. All phones should have that program were it locks phone when entering a vehicle and sends a voice mail to the person who is trying to call you saying that you are currently driving to lower teen crashes. We want to find ways to protect or give teens advice on how much it affects everyone of their mistakes while driving. Teenagers shouldn't even look at their phones while driving. They should definitely put it on silent and if it's an emergency, you can always pull to the side and answer important calls.     In 2007, the latest year for which data are available, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death among 13-19 year-old males and females in the United States. A total of 3,466 teenagers ages 13-19 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2009. This is 60 percent fewer than in 1975 and 15 percent fewer than in 2008. Thirty-three percent of deaths among 13-19-year-olds occurred in motor vehicle crashes, 39 percent among females and 31 percent among males. 16-year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age. The crash rate per mile driven is twice as high for 16-year-olds as it is for 18- and 19-year-olds. About 2 out of every 3 teenagers killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2009 were males. Sixty percent of teenage passenger deaths in 2009 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. Among deaths of passengers of all ages, 18 percent occurred when a teenager was driving. Statistics show that 16- and 17-year-old driver death rates increase with each additional passenger. Eighty-three percent of teenage motor vehicle crash deaths in 2009 were passenger vehicle occupants. The others were pedestrians (7 percent), motorcyclists (4 percent), bicyclists (2 percent), riders of all-terrain vehicles (2 percent), and people in other kinds of vehicles (2 percent). Fifty-five percent of motor vehicle crash deaths among teenagers in 2009 occurred on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
