Dress Day Memo
Victor:
Here are my reactions to your inquiry about a casual dress day program. I’ll respond to each of the questions’ in your e-mail message of May 22.
1. Should we establish a dress-down day? Yes, my employees and I would like to see such a day. In my department a number of employees now have flex schedules. They perform part of their work at home, and they can be as casual as they wish. Employees’ confined here in the office, however, is a little resentful. I think a dress-down day could offer some compensation to those who come to the office daily.
2. Should we implement a dress code? By all means! We definitely need a written dress code to establish standards; and also to protect the company’s stockholders for frivolous lawsuits.
3. Will

The purpose of the dress code is to have a better understanding that students do not come here to show off their style, but to come here to learn and get a better education. Students fail to realize the difference between dressing for success and dressing to impress. Dress code is nothing new to our society; many jobs require you to wear certain types of clothing or a uniform. Therefore, these schools are simply preparing their students to have a successful and bright future. Students should be more concerned about what they can learn, not what they can or cannot wear. Education is what motivates student’s people to the top of the platform their wardrobe. “Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul (Twain)”. Students should beware, their future will not depend on…

Dress codes are rules that the country has utilized for years. But are these rules necessary? They often suppress students’ individuality as well as students’ self-expression. At the same time these rules also discriminate and needlessly sexualize young women. Dress codes were put in place to establish a distraction-free environment for students. And yet, they are doing the opposite, and thus, modifying or eliminating them would be most logical.…

A dress code can prepare students for future jobs and the dress code enforced there. Schools should teach boys not to stare, as well as teach girls modesty then a dress code would not need to be enforced. There are rules that target boys directly but their rules are more about inappropriate logos of tshirts, for girls on the other hand their rules target any piece of clothing on her, the rule can range form ‘it looks inappropriate” to exact measurements; also there are many more rules that target girls. Some schools are not strict about dress codes some simply say ‘no excessive skin’, but it affects girls everywhere that we’re being degraded that way. “To me, it’s not about being able to wear certain kinds of clothing,... It’s more about the message behind it…” (George) We don't want them to walk around school in bikinis we want them to wear the clothes that we don't have to be afraid we're going to be…

I'm sure some people want no dress code at all. And that's fine. But I don't think the teachers and staff want to see things like that in the halls. I can understand that they think they can wear whatever they want, and get away with it. I know what it's like going to stores and seeing some short dress that a model was wearing, or your favorite celebrity was wearing, and it's a miniskirt or a spaghetti strap tank top, but they really don't have to set themselves as a person who disrespects their body. I really don't like that we look up to celebrities, and most of them are wearing low shirts and boots and shorts, and it makes us want to wear that, too. But yes, I do…
