Dress Code Policy In High Schools
School dress code policy is one of the most enforced policies in high schools. All the high schools have a lot of opinions about what is too high, what is too low, what is too short, what is too long, what is too loose, and what is too tight. Because of this, they are very specific in what us girls should and shouldn’t wear. “All dresses, skirts, and shorts cannot be worn above your mid-thigh.” Does that mean we can only wear long shorts? Is it just me or does it sound a little weird? Aren’t long shorts pants? “All pants should be worn on your waist.” What if we want to wear high-waisted pants? Would we get in trouble for wearing pants above the waist?

I am rarely ever the one to post, especially about my issues, but I am speaking for many. While the discussion and arguments about school dress code are going on so isn’t downgrading, stereotyping, and bullying. Many comments have been made by people who are stereotyping others for instance cheerleaders. We are being stereotyped as preppy, snobby, slutty, “the populars”, and the list goes on. We are being used in examples like “The people who wear intentional holey jeans and revealing clothing are “the populars” and cheerleaders.” And “The cheerleaders wear skirts hiked up their butts and push their boobs up to the sky, but I got in trouble for wearing the clothes I did, this is favoritism.” This being all untrue is stereotyping, downgrading…

The first reason the dress code is is bad is because the rules are ridiculous. The school system makes horrible rules for students, like girls not being able to show their shoulders. There is nothing wrong with a shoulder as long as the shirt does not go down too far to show anything, also not being able to show their bra strap. Everyone knows that most girls in high school wear bras. People make a big deal about girls wearing “spaghetti straps” because it is too revealing to the girl's shoulders. In the spring…

Have you ever been sent home from school because of what you were wearing? Maybe you should have been sent home, but you did not get caught? I am writing this paper because high school students across the country. and some parts of the world. get sent home and miss out on education simply because you could see their shoulders. (Buzzfeed) At Haven we have it pretty easy. In other areas it may be more difficult to find a cute outfit to wear. Some may even struggle to find something cute to put with or on their uniform that will not get them in any kind of trouble. School dress codes around the country. and some parts of the world, should be less severe. should not prevent individuality, and should not be difficult to follow.…

Dress code sexism and sexism in general has been a problem for centuries. In the past, dressing double standards didn’t exist because people didn’t question the standards, thus resulting in the embedded, controversial problem that there is today. Now people and especially, middle school and high school girls are recognizing the problem that is dress code sexism. Some solutions to helping dress code double standards is definitely not literally fighting back, but fighting back by being vocal. For example, people can protest, put posters around the school, contacting the local paper, using social media and hashtags to spread awareness of the problem, because like previously said, the majority don’t consider dress codes to be problematic. The best…

I strongly disagree with the fact of the shorts dress code rule being 6 inches or mid-thigh because if your shorts are 6 inches and not mid-thigh you can be dress coded; also if you shorts are mid-thigh and not 6 inches you can again be dress coded. I believe it is unfair because it gets to the point of you not knowing if the shorts are in dress code that you have to wear jeans all year even when its 100 degrees out side. It is also very inconsistent with people getting dress coded and people getting warnings and not being sent in to be dress coded. I personally agree that students should not be wearing booty shorts to school because it is very inappropriate and not expectable, but I do not agree with the fact that some people get dress coded due to the fact that their teacher or a staff member is in a bad mood on day and the next time they wear the same shorts they don’t! In a way the issue can not be fixed but it can be discussed and more consistent. The fact that it can be one 6 inches or the other mid-thigh is logically not fair due to the fact that you do not know what one it has to be. Also you can only be dress coded a certain amount of times until there is extreme consequences. So you do not want to risk the fact of wearing shorts that you don’t know will be in dress code or will not be, and you just wear jeans even though it is extremely hot out side and you risk having a heat stroke. Therefore those are some reasons why the dress code rule for shorts which is 6 inches or mid-thigh is unfair and should be discussed. Even if the rule can not be entirely fixed whether you get dress coded or not, the fact of having the term “6 inches or mid-thigh” should be fixed so girls will know what they can go out and look for to wear to school because its not fair to go out and buy new shorts for school, then you figure out that they are out of dress code because they are not either 6…

The Piedmont Middle School dress code has become a very controversial topic for both the students and faculty. The dress code states that shorts/skirts must be past the fingertips, and shirt sleeves must be at least three fingers in width. While I can see why this code is enforced, it is unfair for many students, and can interfere with student expression, different body types, and the student’s education.…

In Classical High School, a boy and girl are sat beside each other. Both learning. Both participating in class. Both wearing sleeveless shirts. The principal happens to walk in and asks the girl to step out of the class to speak. The girl ends up getting sent home for distracting the class. Dazed and confused, the girl asks why and the principal responds with “your shirt is distracting the boys”. Is this insulting to boys saying they get distracted by foolish things like a shoulder? Or an insult to girls making them seem like they are just sex objects that need to cover up for others sake. Many public high schools have extremely sexist dress codes. Not only is this not equal, but also keeps alive rape culture by saying girls are sluts for having shorts not reaching their fingertips. Sexist standards…

Throughout the United States of America, schools require students to meet a certain standard of dress. Although almost every school’s standard is different, most schools have dress codes. Dress codes range anywhere from extremely loose to extremely strict, yet no matter how hard schools try to prevent problems, things slip through the cracks. Dress codes exist to help students, although in the end it seems they're ineffective. Other countries have solved these issues using school uniforms.…

Boys will be boys, and girls need to conform to keep things under control. Under a strict dress code, school officials make female students conform to the perverted minds of teenage boys. School dress codes claim to teach students how to dress properly for their future career and create a safe environment in school, but in reality it often sexualizes young women’s body parts and underestimates young men’s maturity. Establishing strict dress code rules perpetuates rape culture and prevents young people from having freedom of expression.…
