Dred Scott Decision

“Where slavery is, liberty cannot be; and where liberty is, slavery cannot be,”said abraham lincoln.The Missouri compromise, Uncle tom's cabin, and The dred scott decision were all causes of the Civil War. The Civil War was fought was over slavery. The Missouri Compromise was one reason for the beginning of the Civil War.In 1820, Missouri wanted to join as a slave state but if the state was accepted then there would be more slave states then free states.The Missouri compromise was worked out between Senator Henry Clay and Congress that whenever a slave state was accepted a free state also had to be accepted. Missouri was accepted with the exception of Maine also being accepted as a free state.The south wanted more slaves because they depended on them for all the farming and manufacturing.
In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book called Uncle Toms Cabin. In the story Tom is an enslaved african american who is beaten to death by his owner after refusing to whip another slave. This story was very popular in the north and showed that slavery needed to be ended. Lastly, The dred scott decision has a very important part in the beginning of the civil war.In 1857, Dred Scott went to court to fight for his freedom. Dred scott claimed that his owner had died and since he was living in free territory in a free state the he should therefore be free. The court decided against him saying that they didn’t have have the power to outlaw slavery in any territory.this made the north angry because they wanted all slaves to free in any territory.
