Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

Grey’s Anatomy, a medical drama that has been on air for the past 11 years, is my all-time favorite show. Not only is the plot of the series extremely riveting and tear-jerking, but the characters are all able to relate to an aspect of your life even through your most difficult hardships, especially the protagonist, Meredith Grey. Meredith Grey, is known for her well-roundedness not due to her ability as a surgeon (as she is the head of General Surgery), but because of her willingness to aid others when they’re in times of trouble. This is especially true when it comes to her best friends; Christina Yang, Isabella Stevens, Alex Karev, and George O’Malley; who struggle through deaths, countless failed relationships, and illnesses throughout…

President John F. Kennedy once said that, “conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” This concept has been seen through centuries of civil rights movements and literature by renowned authors such as Franz Kafka and Henrik Ibsen. Franz Kafka’s short story, “The Metamorphosis,” illustrates the life of traveling salesman Gregor Samsa, the breadwinner of his family who seems to face a transformation that affects his role in his house and society. This change into an unknown insect, both physical and mental, ultimately leads to his loss of humanistic characteristics and eventually death. In Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House, a young woman named Nora surpasses the bounds of a housewife when attempting to save her husband’s life.…

Obsession consumes both Madame Defarge’s and Sydney Carton’s lives. Although they are both obsessive, Madame Defarge is more consumed with an obsession than Sydney Carton is.…

DNA is a similarity that all siblings share. Through their DNA siblings have physical similarities as well as mental similarities. Nonetheless, having the same DNA does not at all make you the same. This is displayed in the story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. In this short story, Alice Walker tells about two sisters by the names of Maggie and Dee, who in some ways have similarities, but in other ways they have differences including: their motivations, personalities, and their point of view on preserving their heritage.…

The portrait of Dublin people and society is shown subconsciously through a series of Mrs. Mooney’s plan on forcing Mr. Doran’s marriage. The significant points that describe the characteristic of Dublin people and society are the sexual violation and unspeaking sexual story. Sexual activities or anything related to sexual activity cannot be discussed publicly. Additionally, in the eyes of Dublin people, which regard the 10th commandments and mainly are Catholic, having sex before marriage is considered to be a sin. For those who act such an unforgivable manner as a premarital sex might be criticized severely by the people. As we have seen on page 111, Mrs. Mooney believes that social opinion will be on her side. This can confirm that Dublin…
