Dramaturgical Model Paper
Question1:
If the Republican Candidate proposes to increase military spending, there are several different areas that will be affected. If social institutions such as education, health care, and food/agriculture lose money, it will greatly affect the entire American society. One theory that would be properly involved in this situation is Conflict Theory. Conflict Theorists focus on asking “Who benefits from a particular social arrangement, and at whose expense?” (Ferrante 30). Some options for when military spending is increased, is to go further into debt, raise taxes, or decrease spending for social institutions.

The Dramaturgical model has two parts: front stage and back stage. According to Ferrante, Front stage is “the visible area to the audience, where people feel compelled to present themselves in expected ways” (101). Ferrante then describes back stage as “the area out of the audience’s sight, where individuals let down their guard and do things that would be inappropriate or unexpected in a front-stage setting” (101). An example is when my dog died the morning of my high school graduation. Backstage, I let out all my tears and my feelings. Once I got in front of all of my peers, I had to mask the tears with a smile. I now understand that I was following the Dramaturgical Model. At the time I felt weird changing how I feel, but after learning more about the model, I learned that it is common.
In conclusion, many sociological concepts have impacted my life and changed the way that I view certain issues. I would have never known how to fix many of the issues, without learning about the sociological concepts that were involved. The uniqueness of every human, is backed up by many sociological concepts. It may take some people longer than others, to understand the true meaning behind many of their behaviors.
