Dramatic Monologue High School
Nervous, I took a steady breath to calm myself. The warm, dimly-lit classroom-turned-actors’-lounge was filled with children. These kids however, wore oddly assorted costumes completed with makeup-caked faces. A boy in a suit with a flamboyant tie and glasses commented, “Do I look shiny?” earning a giggle from the company.
A girl dressed in similar clothing stood up, tap shoes clacking against the tiled floor, and, pulling the boy aside she announced, “Stop Len! We need to head onstage.” The actors responded, “Bye!” nerves permeating their voices. With a final smile, the two vanished into the darkness behind the curtains.
The classroom fell into eerie silence. I felt as if we were in space, with the dim lights and odd silence creating an atmosphere of isolation. For months, we had gone to practice, memorized seemingly endless lines, and grown closer together as we put on this play. Now, the exit of Len and Kristina meant the show was beginning. It was a rude awakening to the fact that it was time to showcase our talents. I pulled my chair across the room to a group of about nine kids, creating a louder SQUEAK than I intended. All forty-eight heads swiveled to look at me. My cheeks grew red as a summer sunset. Careful to keep my chair

The only things we could see were the glow-in-the-dark lines of tape on the floor. My breathing grew quick and ragged. My heart pounded. I placed foot in front of foot as the voices on stage signaled that my time was near. I saw the light. The burning, intense, yellow light of the stage. Standing in the wings, I could see a group of kids leaving the stage the opposite way. I gave Omara a little push, her dress ruffling. She walked on stage. She said her line of “__________”. I walked on stage, saw the audience of faces, and thought, It’s time. The moment I’ve been waiting for is here. I took a deep breath, making sure the audience didn’t notice, and began the scene with my line of “Are you okay,

In that heart-freezing, gut-wrenching moment, all eyes were on me. I whirled madly in my seat, scanning the entire audience. The bright room silhouetted the soft but unmistakable shadow of a woman. But there was no one there, of course. There couldn’t have been – yet I definitely did not feel alone.…

“Where were you, too busy flirting with Sophie to hang with us?” Max called over the yelling of the boys by the oak trees. I just waved the question as I was too busy pumping up my confidence and adrenaline, to go up to the Sixth Formers to get some tickets for Sophie. With shaking hands, I waded through the crowd of my classmates who were all hollering at what was probably…

A loud “whoosh” echoes throughout the dark distant auditorium, and in an instant huge gleaming lights lower themselves upon the stage. The stage sits empty, lifeless, waiting, listening..listening for one to drop jaws with their all-knowing Mozart Symphony or disappoint with a piece that has no rhythm. With each day a new audience gathers around to join the stage in listening. To some it just may be a song, but to others it is a message, a chapter, a story. A story that throws all of life's up’s, all of life's downs. All of it’s good days, it’s bad days. Everything described on one sheet of paper.. But ultimately that was the audience's choice. The stage waited each day for the next performer, for the next song..With each passing person a new song, a new story told, and here is mine.…

“205, 341, 201, 210, and 372 please come back onto the stage.” 210, that’s me. I was frozen, I could feel the countless pairs of eyes beating down on me. I felt a hand push me forward, probably Cristina. I quickly glance around the stage, seeing if there was anyone I knew. My eyes spot Emily, center left stage, a smile plastered on her face. I immediately change my expression of fear into a confident smile. ‘Always smile with your eyes,’ my teacher’s advice replays in my head. Bill’s loud, cheesy voice soon filled the room.…

The vile odour of disinfectant permeates the air around me. My heart is racing and my trembling, sweaty hands cling onto my mother’s like a sloth to its branch. Gradually, more doctors begin to crowd around me, resembling vultures hovering over their prey, preparing to strike. The clanging of metal instruments and beeps of various machines distract me momentarily. Looking over to my left, I see a stout, middle-aged man donned in a green surgical gown. He is wearing a big, red foam nose and a multi-coloured cap, with a peculiar propeller-like object perched on top of it. I almost burst out laughing, but fear latches onto me. My eyes pan down from his cap to the sharp object in his hand. Who even is this man? What is he going to do with that?…

The classroom seemed disjointed; there was no focal point in the room. Everyone seemed to be intrigued with something different, their attention was divided. An urgent ring echoed through my reverie. It brought connotations to my mind that it was a message that had significance. Through the cracked speakers, situated at the top right corner of the room, a croaky voice began, “Please excuse this…

As the room fills, the shouts, yells and vague discussion coming from the hoard of tatty teenagers rise to a pitch and volume that could shame a football crowd. Wanting to live up to their reputation, the children continue their barrage of sound, undeterred by the half—hearted efforts of their teachers. Finally, however, as the initial rush of eager bodies reduces, the disruption falls to a minimum and the children split off into groups.…

colorful splash of love, war, and life splashed in my line of vision in the form of words. It was the day of my performance, my feet pulled themselves towards the front of the eight grade reading classroom, my sneakers squealing against the wooden floor and nervous thoughts bouncing around in my head. I looked around to see pairs of eyes tracing each of my movements. The sounds of my shoes smacking against the wooden floor indicated that my coming was expected. I reached the desk, where the book had been open, my eyes rolled through the words as I scanned to check if it was the right page. Yep, the words read were accurate. I wiped my sweaty hands against my plaid uniform skirt. I looked up to find apathetic expressions of adolescents staring…
