Drag Make-Up Essay
Within the context of drag entertainment it is obvious that make-up has a primary role in a drag artist’s consumption to create the character. Make-up within this context refers to theatrical make-up, i.e. make-up that is used to assist in creating the appearance of the characters that actors portray during a theater production, rather than cosmetics. Make-up is used to bring the character to fruition and therefore creates the illusory aspect of a drag artist’s performance: verisimilitude. Mariana Trench explains;

Mariana trench demonstrates that drag make-up is a complex process of studying shadows, bone structure and lighting. The use of language elevates it beyond the cosmetic realm and into that of art. It can be argued that drag make-up application is a

As more make-up is applied the drag impersonator begins to diminish and transform into the drag persona that has been carefully developed down to the finest detail of body language, dictation, voice, biography, personality, etc. It appears to be a personalised, ritualistic process that helps them transition into the desired mind-set or persona so to perform. This process is akin to physicalization in the acting world where an actor will use material resources such as costumes and props to signal something about their character. A drag artist will use make-up to hint to the type of character they are. For example, Wednesday Tuesday has a signature clown lip to signify that she is not a polished drag queen. A drag impersonators make-up application, if completed correctly, along with the effort put in for the character creation process all come together to create an authentic performance. Dependant on the degree of authenticity, some drag artists have a constant struggle to reiterate the division of their character and themselves to their audience and society at large who appears to blur the line between the

In addition, her work has appeared in the New York Times, Smock magazine, and the Asian Pacific American Journal (Suh 187). Based on her reputation, audience can fully trust what she said. Second, Suh used her own experience to tell us used makeup sometimes not look beautiful but horrible. For example, after used eye makeup, Suh could not recognize her face in the mirror because “ the drawn-on fold and dark, heavy shadows distorted and proportioned my whole face” (Suh 189). Suh stared at the mirror, and found the face in the mirror looked like a stranger. She looked terrible after wearing make up. Suh also notice that no everyone is suitable for wearing make up. The Estee lady was pretty, so after her make up she was pretty too. “Her blue eyes were recessed in an intricate pattern of folds and hollows” (Suh 189). However, Suh was not beautiful, as her own description about herself, she was with “ragged hair; the dark circles under my eyes; the facial blemishes” (Suh 187). Each cavity, crease, wrinkle, curve, bump and ridge promotes strong lighting. Features such as the chiseled-out areas created for the eyes, lips and wrinkles in the clothing all capture great opportunities for shade and shadow. The arrangement of each portion, when held next to a strong light source, behaves in a very dynamic gradation system. Because the piece is indeed an off-white hue, the use of material is even more appropriate because the marble’s smoothness makes for a very gradual transition of lighting over rounded areas such as the neck or helmet. The whiteness of the marble, when interacting with a light source, suddenly becomes a medium for dynamic and expressive shapes. Deep cavities and chiseled areas as well as other areas give the piece a certain degree of intensity and dramatic tone.…

    The recent works include pieces that are literally ‘in space’, almost floating, trapped between two panes of glass and tightly held in suspension by industrial straps. Other sculptures have been created around a drawing. In one work, a large sweeping charcoal portrait is encased inside a glass vitrine (or rather, a vitrine is built around it), subverting the inherent hierarchy of sculpture over drawing.…

    A Roman philosopher Plautus once said, “A woman without paint is like food without salt”. It is in human nature to always strive for perfection and new ways to express our selves, cosmetics is the way. Hair care, skincare, toiletry, perfumery and decorative cosmetic products are all used in our daily routines to keep us clean, maintain healthy skin and teeth, to look good and smell nice. European laws that ensure the safety of these types of product call them ‘cosmetics’ and this is the term. Beginning with the Ancient Egyptians 10,000 years Before the Common Era up through today, the 20th century. Civilizations have used forms of cosmetics for centuries in religious rituals, to enhance beauty, and to promote good health. The entire population with large use of cosmetics honored gods, although some of the ingredients were poisonous, allure of cosmetics did not lessen. In Rome, there was a period of time when women were not considered beautiful if they did not wear makeup. England almost accepted a law in 18th century that enabled men to divorce their wives if they caught them wearing makeup. Century later, Queen Victoria publicly declared public use of cosmetic improper and vulgar.…

    Before and during beauty pageants, there are many preparations that happen. Before the beauty pageants, the children’s parents get them tans and flippers which are a type of falsified teeth. After that, the parents either wax or even clear up any imperfections they may have like wrinkles, bushy eyebrows, and/or messed up hair. At the pageants, the girls get covered with make-up in the hopes of hiding any imperfections the child may have. The child is then dressed in whatever attire they are required to wear. For example: dresses, swimsuits, formal attire, and/or casual. After that, the girls will model their attire to the judges. Pageants will continue on into the talent portion in which the children will show their talents to judges. The talents vary from dance routines to karaoke, or even simply doing a catwalk.…

    Fashion is one of the most passionate divisions of art because it so closely involves the human form. My passion for this industry evolved from my captivation with the corset. I have always been fixated with the human form, fascinated by both the mechanic and poetic aspects of the body. Instead of viewing the corset as a restrictive and manipulative tool, I empathized with the Victorian women who sought to emulate the shape of a flower. This interest spiraled into an understanding of how every textile, stitch, and shape of an article of clothing serves to either exaggerate or minimize the body’s curves. Instead of simply finding fashion as a means of expressing individuality, I fell in love with the ability to shine light on the beauty of human…

    Essay On Drag Queens

    • 693 Words
    • 3 Pages

    A drag queen is usually explained as a man (usually gay) impersonating a woman, or several women, for the purpose of entertainment or performance. They can range from those who do it as a job to those who do it as a form of artistic expression. Drag shouldn’t be confused with transvestism, which is very similar, in the sense that involves cross dressing and switching gender roles. Most transvestites do not cross dress to be seen, as drag queens are, but to feel like a woman. Transvestism can also be a sexual fetish, whereas drag rarely is.…
