Downey’s soup case study analysis

Introduction

The purposed of this case study is to analyse actions which had been done by Downey’s Soup in order to expand its market to Japan. This case study will focus on SWOT analysis of Downey’s Soup actions.

Case Summary
Downey’s Soup was established by Jack Downey in over twenty years ago. Its history had proved that its lobster bisque soup had helped it survived in an economic downturn situation in years. Moreover, it is the lobster bisque of Downey’s Soup which had made Japanese delegation on Japanese External Trade Organization (JETRO) impressed and offered the company a chance to export Lobster Bisque Soup to Japan. However, Downey’s Soup learned that exporting agricultural product to Japan was not as easy as it seem. JETRO did not provide complete information about the manner of exporting an agriculture product to Japan and this has resulted in losing money for the cost of research and development effort, packaging, and delivery.
Nevertheless, Downey’s Soup received a valuable lesson from this event. It used its research and development effort to expand the domestic market and attract the attention of one of the nation largest distributor, Liberty Richter Inc.

SWOT Analysis
Strengths
There are a few things that can be considered as strengths for Downey’s Soup. Among other as follows:
1. The lobster bisque soup has become a favorite menu and its popularity was increased.
2. Its research and development effort as strength for developing new product for expanding its domestic market.
Weaknesses
Things which can be considered as Downey’s Soups weaknesses in conducting its business are:
1. Sporadic marketing strategic for the lobster bisque soup
2. Did not have a formal product line
3. Lack of expertise knowledge about exporting agriculture products to Japan.
Opportunities
1. Expanding domestic market with the result from its research and development effort
2. Expanding international market

    The famous Japanese food “Ramen” consists of 3 components. One of the important components is the different kinds of soup. Every Ramen restaurant has their own soup and there is no two of the same. But they are mostly categorized into Shou-yu (soy sauce), Tonkotsu (Pork), Shio (Salt), and Miso (soybean paste). Ramen soups are made by mixing soup stock and sauce. The soup stocks are usually made by boiling ingredients such as chicken, pork bones, katsuo-bushi (dried bonitos), and konbu (a kind of kelp) in water. It varies on the type of soup, but most of the time it takes about 8 hours for the soup stock to be made. On the other hand, the sauces differ in each restaurant, for they are often made with secret recipes of their own. By mixing these two in well proportion, the soup of the Ramen is made. Another important component is the types of noodles. The noodles of Ramen are made by mixing flour and water. Compared to Udon or Soba, Ramen noodles differ very much in taste, color, and texture. There are varieties of noodles used from thick to thin, and soft to hard. But what kind of noodle is used depends on the soup. Ramen restaurants usually lay in noodles from noodle-making businesses, but some make their own just to fit their soup. For example, since miso based soups are very thick, most restaurants use thick noodles so that the taste of noodles doesn’t lose to the strong flavor of the soup. It is important to use noodles that go well with the soup. The last component is the extras. It would be a lonely dish if there were only soup and noodles in a bowl. The extras play an important role in making the Ramen look more appetizing. The most typical extras for Ramen are cha-shu(slices of roast pork), menma(cooked bamboo shoot), negi (welsh onion), and flavored-eggs.     Downey’s Soup Downey’s is an Irish tavern in Philadelphia created over 20 years ago by Jack Downey. Over the years, the fortunes of the restaurant have wavered, but the strength of some favorite menu items has helped it survive economic downturns. In particular, the lobster bisque soup has become increasingly popularity, but Downey’s efforts to market it have been sporadic. Never did Downey imagine that his lobster bisque would someday be the cause of an international trade dispute. Unbeknown to Downey, the Japanese have a strong penchant for lobster. When the Philadelphia office of the Japanese External Trade Organization (Jetro) asked Downey to serve his lobster bisque at a minitrade show in 1991, he began to think about mass production of his soups. The Japanese loved the lobster bisque. They gave Downey a strong impression that the soup would sell very well in Japan. At the time, Downey did not have a formal product line but that seemed to be only a minor obstacle. After the trade show, Michael Fisher, executive vice president for the newly formed Downey Foods Inc., was sent on an all-expenses-paid 10-day marketing trip to Japan by Jetro. (Jetro sponsors approximately 60 Americans for similar trips each year.) Although the interest expressed by the food brokers and buyers he met seemed to be more polite than enthusiastic, he did get an initial order for 1,000 cases of the lobster bisque. The only condition placed by the buyer was to reduce the salt content to comply with local Japanese tastes. Both Jetro and Fisher considered this initial order the beginning of rich export relationship with Japan. Fisher contracted a food processor in Virginia, adapted the recipe for the new salt content, and shipped the soup to Japan in short order. Visions of expanded sales in Japan were quickly dashed as the cases of soup were detained at customs.
