Doug Swieteck is a 14 year old boy with a life that is anything but desirable, he lives in a small town he hates in upstate new york, has an abusive father, a brother who is scarred from the Vietnam war and another brother known for being a criminal. He tries to find happiness in the small things like his mothers smile and joy, drawing birds, his friend lil and his baseball jacket that used to be owned by a baseball legend. Once these things start disappearing his mother stops smiling his fathers job is in danger and his jacket is stolen. He overcomes this and against the odds makes his life better with the help of noble people like the librarian and his teacher.     The book begins with the rescue basically, of this young boy named Dave Pelzer. During an examination by the school nurse Dave said he ran into a door, the nurse reminds him that he said that the week previous. Dave then changes his story saying he was playing baseball and got hit by the bat accidentally.     The two main characters in The Stotan are Walker and Jeff. Walker is the main character in this book; he narrates the book by writing in his journal. Walker is the captain of the swimming team in his high school. He has many issues in his life for example his brother being a drug addicted and his parents being old for the age that they had him. He does his best not to let any of it get to him and always does his best to encourage his team mates during the season. Jeff is the oldest out of all of the friends and team mates. He is also to be considered the most mature in the entire group. In the book, Edgewater Angels by Sandro Meallet, the story is set in the projects of San Pedro, California, a heavily gang influenced town that is a part of Los Angeles. The book exposes the youthfulness of Sunny Toomer, a mischievous teen always faced with the decision between right and wrong in a neighborhood where you can get jumped for walking on the wrong side of the street. Sunny is just trying to find a way out of this life-style he was born into.
