Dorothy Dandridge: The Most Phenomenal Performers
Dorothy Dandridge was one of the most phenomenal performers I have ever seen! It is an honor to watch her put her talent to work. Her singing is angelic, her dancing is inspiring, and her acting is perfection in its raw form. Writing this report about her is not just a task, but an honor.
Dorothy Jean Dandridge was born in Cleveland Ohio 's City Hospital on November 9, 1922. Her mother was a hopeful actress named Ruby Dandridge. Ruby had walked out on Dorothy 's father, Cyrus, five months previous to Dorothy 's birth taking her first child, Vivian, with her. A friend of Ruby named Geneva Williams soon moved in with them, and Geneva began teaching the girls singing, dancing and piano. The girls were too young to realize it at the time, but

She sings, dances, and acts marvelously. She had parts in many movies such as Malaga, Porgy and Bess, Tamango, Island of the Sun, and many more. Her biggest success in my opinion was her part in Carmen Jones where she played the starring role of Carmen Jones! When auditioning for the part of Carmen, Dorothy did not get it, but she did not give up. She bought a wig, a skirt and a low cut blouse that she wore off the shoulder, and met with the director once more. At that very moment the director knew that he had found his Carmen Jones. And of course you cannot forget what a success the Wonder Children were, as a trio and a …show more content…
She was a wonderful actress and entertainer. Her husband, one of the Nicholas brothers, didn’t treat her well and left her alone without transportation to the hospital when she went into labor resulting in severe retardation of their only child named Harolyn Dandridge. Dorothy felt she could not take care of this child on her own, giving her up to a foster home, where Harolyn could get the help she needs. I praise Dorothy for that because I cannot imagine how hard it must be to have to leave your only child, but she did it for Harolyn’s sake. Dorothy was married twice, to Jack Denison, a white restaurant owner and to Harold Nicholas. She ended up divorcing both of them; proving to women that we are all strong and can make it on our own; proving to women that every woman disserves to be treated

Lena Horne an honorary lady of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated was a great artist in the Harlem Renaissance era. Lena abilities to sing and act paved a way for many African Americans. Due to her skin complexion, she receives roles that other African American women couldn’t get. She was the first black female to receive a very long contract with MGM. Her impact encourages many great women singers today because she broke the color barrier in music. I think if it wasn’t for Lena Horne, we wouldn’t have as many women singers and rappers in the music world today.…

Another inspirational person in the jazz music was Ella Fitzgerald. A teenager in 1938, she became the leading light in her band as the singer. She had already become a sensation with her exquisite voice, and she would become the main attraction in 1939, after the death of Chick Webb the drummer, and the bandleader. She had to become the focal point of the group at twenty. She directed and managed the band while she was the singer in the group for two years. The amazing aspect of Fitzgerald was that she had managed to exceed expectations by becoming the leader of the group in organizing compositions and still excelling as a vocalist. She was a revelation on how women could become influential and had the talent to surpass their male…

If someone is Christian, some of the things they do to praise the Lord most likely started with Aimee Semple McPherson in the 1920’s. McPherson was the first woman preacher in history. She toured the west coast preaching the Gospel to many people, gaining a great deal of followers. When she settled in Los Angeles to start her ministry her fame increased along with her profits. While her success was booming, she disappeared very unexpectedly and no one knows what really happened. After this incident, her ministry surprisingly became even more popular. A cornucopia of her followers continued following her and carried out her legacies while others saw her as nothing but a phony. McPherson took a lot of criticism after the disappearance, but still stayed strong and managed to keep ahold of her Christianity.…

Sister Dorothy was a woman who wanted to get her word out and make what people thought was impossible, possible. That is one of the reasons why I admire her the most, she was convinced that she was able to rebuild the forest to make it where it was before. I also admired her courageousness to step out and do the job even though she was on the death list in the Amazon. She knew what she was doing everyday was a possibility of her getting punished by the gunmen. There are not a lot of people in this world that would sacrifice their lives to do something to save God’s environment. Her last words were very meaningful to us and especially the gunmen who shot her. Sister Dorothy’s last words were from Luke 6:20 “Blessed are you who are poor, for…

One of the things she accomplished was writing pieces of literature and plays. She was the first woman to publish books and plays using her own name and not a male pseudonym. Every woman who was a playwright before her had used male pseudonyms to avoid being criticised for it. Her first play was called The Generous Man, and it was about a rich man who struggled with the thought that he could do anything we wanted to do to women because, at that time, women had almost no rights. It also discusses how going to prison because a person has debt is unjust. She wrote many other plays…
