Doorley Good Life

Doorley’s essay has changed the way that I look at life. Before I viewed the choices that we made, simply as choices. Now I realize that there is so much more behind every choice, and often the choices that we make are already made for us. Frequently we make our choices on the premise of what others have done before us, rather than doing what we want and, or need to do. Doorley’s essay also scares me, because it leads me to believe that no decision I’ve ever made was truly authentic due to all the surrounding influence that I face on a daily basis. Also, the influence of others is only getting stronger these days as we see it on social media and television constantly. My computer helps me do almost all of my school work, and provides a never ending source of entertainment via the internet and PC games. I also value my phone, because it keeps me in touch with family and friends that are far away, and also gives me the opportunity to meet and make new friends on social media sites. After reading Doorley’s essay my interpretation of the good life has change a bit. Before I saw it as money and success. Now, I see the good life as making choices that are 100 percent authentic. Doorley’s essay also confirmed my belief that in order to live the good life you have to have happiness in something, whether that is drinking, sobriety, or a sport. I would have to agree that happiness is the final goal in human life. Everything we do is for the better of oneself. In Doorley’s case alcohol made him happy so he drank a lot. When he no longer found happiness in alcohol he admitted that he was an alcoholic and got help. Doorley then found happiness in his sobriety, and new found authenticity of choices. In the end, Doorley’s essay has forever changed the way I look at the choices that we as humans
