Donald Trump's Use Of Propaganda In Presidential Elections
Every four years presidential elections are held here in the United States, and a Democratic and Republican party run. The candidates of each party have and use their own tactics of propaganda. Propaganda is information used to promote or publicize a particular political cause, usually biased or misleading. Donald Trump uses some strategies to attack candidates at a personal level and not a professional level. The three most common propagandist tactics used by Donald Trump in any presidential debate are name-calling, card stacking, and glittering generalities.
One technique Trump is most known for using is the name-calling technique. Name-calling is when negatively charged names that are thrown at the opposing side or competitor. One example

Card stacking is when one side may suppress or distort evidence to divert attention from the real problem at hand. One example of this is Trump's speech in December 2015, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Trump had said that democratic runner, Clinton, former husband, Bill Clinton, is a “tremendous” abuser of women. Another stab a candidate Democratic runner, Clinton, was stated on Twitter back in April of 2015. Trump had tweeted on Twitter that “If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?” Trump continues to bring up candidates past to win arguments and avoid the more serious matters at hand. These card-stacking comments are not the only techniques of propaganda that are …show more content…
Glittering generalities is when advertisers surround their products with attractive and slippery word phrases. Trump uses this example very well with one of his famous quotes. Trump’s “I am going to make America great again.” quote is one of the most well known example from this debate. Trumps quote “A Nation without borders is not a nation at all.” is another example of glittering generalities. By using the word “nation” it shows unity between the citizens. Another example came from an interview in December 2015, Trump made a glittering generality after being widely criticized for his plan to block Muslims from entering the United States. He responds with “Many Muslim friends of mine are in agreement with me.” He brags that “One of the most important peoples in the Middle East.” told him he was doing a great service. While that whole statement contradicts itself, voters continue to support this Republican

In 2008, then Senator and later President Barack Obama presented a moving speech entitled, “A More Perfect Union.” He spoke mostly about race, but also talked about religion, gender, and other qualities that make the American population so unique and diverse. In this presentation, Obama used many literary devices to make his speech convincing and moving. One of these devices that reoccurs is a propaganda technique called Card Stacking. This is when an author slants a message in some form or another. For example, Barack speaks about his time at Trinity. As with, “other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety..” (Obama) After this, he goes on to explain the rowdiness of his church,…

In this episode of Washington Week we watch as Susan Davis, Alexis Simendinger, Michael Duffy, and John Harwood discuss the issue of how Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz use Donald Trump as a punching bag in the last Republican debate and if it altered Trump's campaign indefinitely. In the beginning of this episode we see how Trump, Rubio, and Cruz battle each other to prove who would be a better president, however Cruz and Rubio were prepared to team up and bombard Trump with child like arguments. For example, Rubio calls Trump a con man and gets a laugh out of the audience when he says, “Well now he’s repeating himself” and that Trump, “wanted to make sure his pants weren’t wet”. Likewise, Cruz reveals to the audience that Trump says he will go to…

On June 16th at his very own Trump Tower in New York City, Donald Trump announced that he would be running for president. It was only thirty seconds into his speech when Trump committed his first fallacy. In an attempt to insult the intelligence of his fellow GOP candidates, he compared their incompetence toward air conditioners to their supposed inability to beat ISIS. “They didn’t know the air-conditioner didn’t work,” “How are they going to beat ISIS?” This is a bad example fallacy due to his use of an example that fails to prove the conclusion and has little connection to it. Despite the complete lack of relation between Trump’s example and his conclusion, he was still able to provoke the audience into feelings of contempt toward the other…

In“Trump’s Bluster Is Heard Around the World,” an article published on Yahoo! Politics by Gregory Katz, sarcastic tone and vivid descriptions portray Donald Trump as a selfish human being to manipulate readers he will not be a good president. Katz’s sarcastic and criticizing tone adds to the negative view of Trump presented in this article;“His is clearly a recognized name worldwide, which is not to say it's a beloved one.” Katz then proves this point by quoting individuals from around the world. In the first description of Trump, a woman who lives next to a Trump resort calls Trump a spoiled “strange fish.” She then describes his toddler-like tantrums, causing an image of diaper wearing Trump whining and flopping for what he wants to pop into our heads. Katz’s next proof is a video of Mexican comedians dressed as Donald Trump performing an act written from his statements. The comedians are all wearing fake guts, Neanderthal clothing, and blonde wigs. Katz writes, “It's striking how many people know of him at all,” as if Trump is some new American celebrity who is just now getting attention for his statements. It is almost impossible to not recognize the Trump name. His name is on everything he owns, and he owns buildings, programs, and boats worldwide. Trump had been known by the world way before he decided to run for president. To end the article and finish his characterization of Trump, Katz writes,“That would be one side of Trump that few if any have seen — one who says ‘sorry’.” Like Buzzfeed and Alphacat, Katz includes mockery of Trump so viewers will chuckle at their possible leader. This humor alongside Katz’s sarcastic and condescending tone alarm readers that Trump is well known, not well…

The party insiders must have debated with each other to come to a decision on who to throw their support behind her. The same theory cannot be use to describe how Trump can to the title of Republican Nominee because his strategy for running his campaign is vastly different from any politician who became before him and his boast of his endorsements is another example of why. Trump ran his campaign similar to the theory of ‘fisherman-centered’ through the use of his rhetoric the Republican Nominee was able to gain support moving forward on the campaign trail. Trump’s persuasive diction is a clear example of how he attracted ‘the fish’ to come to him. Although Trump’s choice of words clearly had an impact on his nomination, social media help as well to aid his nomination.…

The increased amount of news broadcasts and social media being used by our government to force feed us with fake information, has lead for our entire nation to be at a loss of whether or not we can ever trust our elected officials, and their administration again. In light of Donald Trump’s new presidency, many have learned that our government is not forced to tell the “truth,” and as Donald Trump so commonly does, can tell their own constructed “truth.” We have seen this constructed truth thrust upon us so many times, by Trump and his administration, over the frivolous and the important. If live you in America, or are interested in American politics, you most likely have seen the terms “fake news” and “alternate facts.” These terms come straight…

Speaker’s use diction, syntax, and imagery to reflect their tone. In her final argument, Clinton says “After the world watched with horror as the twin towers fell, he called in to a New York TV station, and even on that horrible day when thousands of people lost their lives, he couldn’t stop himself from pointing out that now, because the towers had fallen, a building he owned was the tallest in Lower Manhattan.” Hillary Clinton's use of words like “horror” and “horrible” sets an apathetic tone. By setting this tone Clinton hopes to show voters how self-centered Donald Trump is. While Clinton strives to prove that Donald Trump was self-centered, Trump ventured to show that Hillary Clinton was crooked. Donald Trump first called Hillary Clinton…

For example, the Justice Department sued Trump’s real estate company twice for not allowing black people to rent his apartments. The company gave different rental terms and conditions to black people that were unfair. The company also lied to them, saying their were no rooms available. During the presidential debates, Donald was asked about those claims and responded saying how an abundance of other companies have done that as well, as if that makes it okay for a future president to do so. In addition, Donald also attacked Muslim gold star parents verbally. Their son had died serving in the Iraq War. After the father gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention Trump said, “ If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”(Marans, “Here Are 13 Examples Of Donald Trump Being Racist). This remark is racist without a doubt and the effect of these examples are scary. He also accused Hillary Clinton of writing a script for the father which is rude and disrespectful. When it comes to communication, Donald Trump had a very unique approach. He does not “play it safe” at all. Instead, he is bold and rather casual in debates, and it works. Donald Trump is appealing to a younger crowd beginning with his communication strategy. He talks like he is in high school. He uses his words in a clear way where everyone can comprehend the message he is trying to get across. While it could potentially and did in fact offend people who find themselves more sophisticated, it appealed to the average person. Also, he has sort of mastered exploiting whoever his current opponent is. He proclaims whatever he wants about them, not paying much attention to the truth. For anyone who feels that they have lack of power or are voiceless,…

This platform promises the idea of building a wall around the mexican-american border, having an anti-muslim ban in america which he calls ‘Extreme Vetting’, and closing the doors on syrian refugees whom he refers to as terrorists. “[Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox], get your money ready because you’re going to pay for the wall.”, “Somebody’s doing the raping. The thing is women being raped, well, then who’s doing the raping?” (Donald Trump,2016) Trump condemns the Mexicans for being ‘rapists’; Trump foolishly believes that Mexicans sends their worst people in order to bring America down. He then goes on to say that he’ll get the president of Mexico to pay for the wall he intend to build. This speech began as epideictic, with a brief mention of his condolences for the families and the lives lost, and included a moment of silence. However, the remainder of his speech turned to a more deliberative type of oratory, which is also known as political rhetoric. This type of rhetorical setting addresses topics such as war and peace, national defense, trade, and legislation, to assess what is harmful and beneficial (Herrick, 2016). During his speech, Trump delivered self-congratulatory comments, political attacks, and strove to instill fear of terrorism. His speech was used an opportunity to spread suspicion and to frame himself as uniquely positioned to make the country safer. There was no sincere outreach to the American public, and the facts he presented did not appear to match the rhetoric.…
