Domestic Violence In The NFL

There is a huge issue with domestic violence in the National Football League. Domestic violence is the NFL’s number one off the field issue, as domestic violence keeps occurring in the player’s lives. Football players are abusing their kids, wives and girlfriends every day, and then proceed to go on and play in an NFL game where they are being cheered for instead of punished. Domestic Violence has been going on for years in the NFL, but now it is becoming more of a problem than it was. All these players with assault and domestic violence charges being brought against them, Roger Goodell the NFL commissioner announced the league’s new six-game suspension punishment for a first time domestic violence offense, and second time offenders will be banned from the NFL for at least a year (1). With this move Goodell seems to be aggressively pursuing a strong course of action to combat domestic violence (1). Nearly a whole month after the domestic violence clause was implemented by the NFL, a well-known running back Ray Rice for the Baltimore ravens was accused of beating his fiancé in an elevator, ”there was video footage of this”(2). Before the video was ever released to the public Rice received only a two games suspension by the NFL. The NFL’s Roger Goodell was in the spot light. Thousands of

Roger Goodell then summoned six domestic violence experts to help craft a new policy (3). The new policy states for a one year ban from the NFL if found guilty of domestic violence. This was a huge triumph, first and foremost for the NFL and also for women because at first the NFL wasn’t taking things as seriously as they should have been
