Dolores Huerta Speech
The session that I attended was Dolores Huerta speech, which was very interesting. Dolores Huerta was born on April 10, 1930, she is a labor leader and civil rights activist who, along with Cesar Chavez, co-founded the national Farmworkers association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta has received numerous awards for her community service and advocacy for workers, immigrants, and women’s rights. She is truly a leader, working tirelessly to help the poor and women and children. She talks about war, genocide, Mass incarceration, and poverty. During her participation in non-violent protest she was arrested 22 times trying to make changes in society. Her main question was what can we do as people to solve things in the world? Putting political issues on politicians. She talks about how change comes from the bottom, people have to be responsible because at the end of the day no one is going to make changes for us we as people have to make them for ourselves.
She also talks about immigrants coming to the United States for better living because they are forced out of their countries where there are no jobs and that’s why they come to America. In the process of finding jobs, and creating a new life the economy is suffering. This brings me back to what we are talking about in class, which is immigrants coming to the U.S. for a better life and how people don’t want them here. People voted for proposition 187 in 1994, in California which is (also known as the Save Our State (SOS) initiative). This ballot was to establish a state-run citizenship screening system and prohibits illegal aliens from using health care, public education and other social services in the U.S. State of California. Huerta argues Why is there a problem to help these people out?, the United States is the wealthiest country, why can’t the U.S. supply free health care, education and other social services? She talks about how Cuba give all citizens education, and free health care.

She discussed her ideas on abortion and how she believed that men should share some of the blame/ punishment that a woman receives for aborting an unwanted child since it is equally his fault for impregnating her with the child. Her solution was to require all men who contribute to an unwanted abortion to under go a vasectomy that can be reversed later in life if the man decides to marry and start a family. I believe her idea is actually very good idea, since the vasectomy is reversible and would make a lot of young men think twice about fooling around unprotected and would decrease the number of babies aborted per year. She also talked about all of the black inventors who helped shaped America and its technology, and how we are not taught about these inventors in school. She noted that the man who created the stoplight was African American, yet most of us were never taught this, which was true. I had never heard of this and I think it is important to know and give credit where it is due. Aside from her speech, the event was run very nicely, there were an adequate number of seats for the event, and I appreciated the complimentary food and drinks. I look forward to attending more of our schools on campus events in the…

Today I wanted to talk about a woman who is very heroic and changed the lives of many slaves, a woman named Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was a woman who is famous for her hard work as an abolitionist and being the conductor of the Underground Railroad during the turbulent 1850’s. She helped many other slaves like herself escape to freedom. Harriet was a strong woman who was filled with determination, strength, passion, and patience. She was a true hero who wanted to serve people and she was extremely brave for her actions of freeing so many slaves. Considering she was a slave herself, if she had been caught who knows what kind of terrible consequences she would have had to face, one being death. But she didn't let that stop her, she wasn't…

Clinton’s Captivating DNC Speech On September 5th 2012, former president Bill Clinton stepped on stage to address citizens at the Democratic National Convention and countless other Americans watching from home. Clinton’s speech took place prior to the Republican National Convention, and responds to many of the misleading claims that were made there. Clinton’s clear goal and objective is to inform and educate the American voters as to why he believes Barak Obama should be re-elected as opposed to Governor Romney. In doing this he not only gives the facts, but cements his ethos by referencing his own presidency and letting his record speak for itself on issues such as; jobs, the economy, healthcare, and even the constant bickering between parties.…

The speech “I have a dream” by Martin Luther King is acknowledged as one of the best speeches ever delivered. His escalated rhetoric demanding racial justice and an integrated society became a slogan for the black community. King’s words proved to be the basis for understanding the social and political upheaval at the time and gave the nations people a voice of their own to express what was happening. The key message King hoped to get across in his speech was that all people are created equal and that it must be the case for the future of America. King’s speech was by no means improvised, it was well researched and in preparation he studied the Bible, The Gettysburg Address and the US Declaration of Independence as he alludes to all three in his address. The speech can only be described as a political work of poetry and a well delivered, unintentional, yet beautiful, sermon full of biblical language and imagery. As well as rhythm and frequent repetition, alliteration is a key device, used to hit home major points.…

Within each and every one of us, there lies a very distinct and recognizable force that urges us to take action. It brings forth a feeling of which we all are unmistakably familiar. Big or small, we all have felt this feeling. It is felt it in the midst of a crisis when the safety of life is the only thing at mind. Or when vigilant confrontation arises, and the truth must be heard. It moves within us in situations of less dire consequence too, like when the alarm sounds on an early morning and the blood in your body seems to have frozen over completely solid, throughout the course of the night. Your limbs feel too stiff to get up, yet the alarm does not cease to sound on and remind you of what must be done. The call to move remains the…
