An example, I was a brand new to the school I work at. I was assigned the title of Crisis Management Para for a young caucasian boy as I am an African American woman. This was a family suing the school and the child very violent injuring staff as parents refuse to medicate him. As a crisis para for my school, they could not trust me. On top of that, I was African American. I knew, going into this that my experience would be difficult to engage the parents and be on board with what I had to offer looking past the negative as well as my skin color. Lum’s work advises that people of diverse cultures often are hesitant to approach social services. My use of the cultural competence principles learned to that point in the various courses taken played a huge role in how I went about the task of engaging these parents. One key principle I utilized then and now was that of simple rapport building with parents in the school community. This type of rapport building includes an open invitation to meet with me at any time, and friendly discussions with them as a family unit to foster comfort. I kept an open mind to understand why they refuse medication not putting my personal feelings in the mix. Making a point to use friendly language and a comfortable, respectful demeanor when I approached the parents with issues regarding their child.
