Do the Ends Justify the Means

Abraham Lincoln once said “Any man can stand up against adversity, to see a mans true character give him power.” There are many wasy to obtain power, most of which involve some less than honest actions. Machiavelli was a noble in Italy during a time of unstability. As such he wrote a guide on how to be an effective leader, this guide was titled “The Prince”. One of the main themes of this was that the end justifies the means, that you could and should do whatever is necessary in order to reach the desiered result.

There is no such thing as a perfect ruler, there is only effective rulers and ineffective rulers. Macchiaveli wrote his book so that he could explain what believed made someone an effective ruler. Being a leader of any sort is no easy task. You are always forced to make decisions that seem like nomatter what you do someone is going to be getting the short end of the stick. Macchiavelli wrote that when put in a situation such as that it is necessary to look at what would be the most desired for all the people affected and to take into mind your own needs and desires. It is inevitable that alongt the lines someone is going to get hurt or mistreated, your cant focus on the downside of the plan, quite to to the contrary, you should focus on the positive side, that side being the one with the desired outcome. The leader needs to recognize that he is in that position because he is smarter than his subordinates, that is he is in charge. Because of this, he is the one responsible for the tough decisions. The leader can not be afraid to make a decision he know will hurt people if he also knows that in the long run it will be for the best. In other words, sometimes you have to do the wrong things for the right reason.
