Based on our reading of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” people of 1790 may have been more superstitious or more likely to believe in ghosts than people today because the people of 1790 had no scientific explanations to what was going on around them. So, they made up these ideas to give them an answer or explanation. Today we have technology and a lot of scientific research, so we can tell if something is fake or not real when these ideas come into our heads. In 1790, they also didn’t know that some of the noises they hear may be a trees or bushes in the wind. They lived in small towns and told stories to make up…

The ghost story gave me mixed feelings on how to take it from a historian point of view. The story was Mr. Fleetwood’s own perception of what happened and how he remembered it at that moment. I will cover the rationality of trusting the content, the justification of it being historically true, and if the metaphysical evidence of ghost must be true for the story to be historically true.…

Ghosts have been a popular subject for millennia, appearing in countless stories, from "Macbeth" to the Bible, and even spawning their own folklore genre: ghost stories. Ghosts are perhaps the most common paranormal belief in the world. Part of the reason is that belief in ghosts is part of a larger web of related paranormal beliefs, including near-death experience, life after death, and spirit communication. The idea that the dead remain with us in spirit is an ancient one, and one that offers many people comfort; who doesn't want to believe that our beloved but deceased family members aren't looking out for us, or with us in our times of need? Most people believe in ghosts because of personal experience; they have seen or sensed some unexplained press…

This statement may seem uncomplicated but it nonetheless is the main criterion which ghost stories must meet. Daniel Cohen defines a ghost as “a soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible forms or other manifestations, to the living” (bk. 8). Usually defined as eerie spirits, ghosts haunt “particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life” (Cohen bk. 8). Ghosts can be described as wispy spirits, solid beings, invisible individuals, or any other of the many imagined forms (Cohen bk. 8). The word ghost is derived from the Old English word gast, which is the Germanic word gaistaz. These words come from “a root denoting ‘fury or anger’ reflected in Old Norse geisa, ‘to rage.’” This Old English not only means human spirits or souls of the living or dead, but also refers to the Latin word spiritus which means “breath, blast” (Mencken 108). This description means that ghosts could refer to angels and demons, or even demonic possessions. There are many forms and ideas which a ghost can represent, but the main forms which will be focused on are ghosts which act as the spirit or soul of a deceased…

This may sound silly, but when this statement is taken into consideration it makes perfect sense. If ghost exists, then when does the person become a ghost? “After they die,” you may say. If that is accurate, then does their clothes also die. No, that makes utterly no sense what so ever. In the article Top 10 Reasons Ghost Aren't Real it states, “In fact, most of the reports of ghosts describe them as being in “period dress.” Do ghost have their own personal closet we don't know about? Or do they only haunt in the period for which they died in? It makes no sense that the ghost have clothes on if there aren't any ghostly clothes for them to be wearing. The clothes in which they die in is physically left where it is there is no way for it to disappear or take another…

In screenwriting terms, the ghost is the event of the past- events that occur before the timeline of the screenplay- that comes back to haunt the protagonist, usually during the crucial moment. The ghost enables a dimensionality to a character that may otherwise not be afforded by the simple progression towards the dramatic need. The emergence of the ghost helps the audience understand that this character existed before the events occurring now (Weiland 2017). Dimensionality ( a term loved by producers) is simple used to explain in layman’s terms the ease of which the audience relates to and identifies themselves in the characters plight. The events which tie in the ghosts emergence are specifically designed to bring out the truth…

My paragraph about ghosts was, “I really don’t believe in ghosts. It seems like a dumb idea to me.…

What do you think is scary? When people ask you what you think is scary, you will usually say your biggest fear, but I think ghosts are the scariest. Either that or flesh-eating zombies! When I think of ghosts, I think of the whole furniture moving on its own thing or your traditional bed sheet ghost. However, in early ghost stories the ghost never tried to hurt or scare the people but were said to have been asking for help like getting a proper burial or finish something that the ghost never got to do in its lifetime. Some of these ghost stories date back as far as 3,000 years! One story takes place around 2,000 years ago when a man named Homer wrote an Iliad. In the story a deceased warrior named Patnoclos visited his friend Achilles as a…
