1. DNA molecule with a length of 2m can fit inside a nucleus that is invisible by the naked eye by coiling around itself several times. It continues to coil even more (Supercoiling), arranging itself on histones, which are proteins.
2. Nitrogen bases determine the traits of living organisms by coding the 20 amino acids. The order of the amino acids determines what protein is made; therefore, proteins are the makeup of all living organisms. Proteins regulate the structure and function of all living organisms.
3. Humans contain 46 copies (23 pairs) of chromosomes in somatic cells. These copies are inherited from the mother and father. In those chromosomes, it is an estimated 20,000-25,000 human protein-coding genes.
4. This statement is an analogy to DNA extraction because DNA is very small and thin making it very hard to see far away, like a single cotton thread. If thousands of DNA strands were packed together it would be easier to see, like a rope.
5. The food source must be mashed because it bursts the plasma membranes and nuclear membranes, releasing the contents of the cells, including DNA.
6. Cold water is better than warm or hot water for extracting DNA because the DNA will become soluble in the ethanol solution; making it less visible to see. Cold water helps the DNA to precipitate more quickly and low temperatures protect the DNA by slowing down the activity of enzymes that could break it apart.
7. The purpose of the salt is to keep the proteins in the extract layer. DNA can clump together in the solution. The salt causes the phosphate ends of the DNA to come closer together which will make it easier to precipitate out of solution.
8. The purpose of the detergent in the lab is dissolving the lipids of the cell membrane and organelles to release the DNA.
9. The purpose of the enzyme is to break down the lipids.
10. The purpose of the rubbing alcohol is making the DNA more visible because DNA is not soluble in

A molecule of DNA is made up of long chains of polymers and monomers called nucleotides. Those chains, two in particular that compose a strain of DNA, are formed by the grouping of nucleotides into polynucleotides. A nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group make up the composition of a nucleotide. In the case of DNA, the four nucleotides that are found along the chain of DNA are thymine (T), cytosine (C), adenine (A), and guanine (G). Those nucleotides are joined by their covalent bonds, more specifically the sugars and phosphates which compose the sugar-phosphate backbone of the polynucleotide.…

Describe the structure of DNA.DNA is thread formed by two strands, related together to form a double helix. The double helix looks like a twisted ladder. The sides of this ladder are long unites called nucleotides and are made of three parts; a nitrogenous base, a sugar, and a phosphate group. The sides of the ladder or the nucleotides from the two separate strands of the DNA are attached by an appendage made of one of four separate bases. These appendages represent the rungs of the DNA ladder and are attached to the complimentary strand of the DNA. The bases or rungs are made of either Adenine (A) OR Thymine (T) or Cytosine (C) and Guanine (G). The attachment of the strands by the bases is specific Adenine can only join with Thymine, and Cytosine can only join with Guanine. Since this base pairing is specific, if one knows the sequence of bases a long one strand of the DNA one will also know the strand of the DNA one will also know the sequence along the complimentary strand.…

DNA is a structure of specific molecules and a complex mixture of chemicals. DNA is a nucleic acid, which is a group of complex compounds that can be found in all living cells or viruses, and controls cell health and function. Nucleic acids are composed of polymers and monomers, which are referred to as nucleotides. There are four different types of nucleotides that make up the structure of DNA, which are abbreviated A, C, T, and G. Covalent bonds join together nucleotides through sugar and phosphate. Polynucleotides, or a polymer nucleotide, which tends to be longer than a monomer nucleotide, contains many variations of arrangements of A, C, T, and G.…

DNA molecules are very long. They wrap around proteins and wind tightly, forming structures called chromosomes. A human somatic (non-sex) cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Twenty-two pairs are autosomes, which do not differ between the sexes. The autosomes are numbered from 1 to 22, with 1 the largest. The other two chromosomes, the X and the Y, are sex chromosomes. The Y chromosome bears genes that determine maleness. In humans, a female has two X chromosomes and a male has one X and one Y. Charts called karyotypes display the chromosome pairs from largest to smallest.…

Background: The wild strawberry is a diploid because it only has two sets of chromosomes. While the grocery store kind is an octoploidy because it has eight sets of chromosomes. The reason we chose the grocery store strawberry is because we’d be able to extract more DNA. Ripe strawberries make enzymes which help break down the cell walls making it easier to extract the DNA. We will be using a solution called lysis buffer which is made out of water, detergent, and salt. The detergent is used to help dissolve the lipid bilayer of the cell membranes. The salt is used to help remove the proteins from the DNA and to keep the proteins in the extract layer so that they aren’t mixed in with the DNA extract. Cold alcohol is important because it helps the DNA become more visible.…
