To those people in the huts and villages of half the globe struggling to break the bonds of mass misery, we pledge our best efforts to help them help themselves, for whatever period is required — not because the Communists may be doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.

So let us begin anew — remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. And, if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor — not a new balance of power, but a new world of law — where the strong are just, and the weak secure, and the peace preserved.

All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days; nor in the life of this Administration; nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.

In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.

Now the trumpet summons us again — not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need — not as a call to battle, though embattled we are — but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, “rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation,”² a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.

Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more

It saddens me to hear about the complete lack of value to the war effort put on by this small group of Americans. That key leaders given the authority to effect change sit idle while lives are lost. But then, as I stomach that blow, I focus on their true grit, their courage, their resolve, their valor, the bravery, their fearlessness, their dedication, the sheer tenacity of these Hero’s, and I am reminded of why our country is so great. God bless those that lost their lives in this battle, and the families that they left…

Admiral McRaven’s will not know the outcome of his speech given that day. Nor will the over 8,000 students, faculty, and staffs in attendance, one can only assume that the inspiration given forth by this will greatly impact all those who leant an ear. “If you do these things, then the next generation and the generations that follow will live in a world far better than the one we have today”(48), which was said by Admiral McRaven, knowing that the effect had on all who witnessed; seen or heard the speech will not be known for future generations to…

In his article, “Famine, Affluence and Morality”, philosopher Peter Singer observes that that there are millions of people around the world who are leading misery lives and suffering death, because of famine , war, lack of shelter, and adequate medical care. He states that although rich nations have contributed great sums of money for these causes, they are still not giving enough in comparison to their Gross National Product (GNP). He points out that many nations only contributes about one percent of their GNP.…

Through the emotional and ideological power of his rhetoric, Lincoln’s speech not only inspires Union soldiers to create a free and just world, but also reinvigorates this intrinsically human struggle for moral progress within responders from any context. The allusions to the Declaration of Independence at the onset of the speech, with the direct quote of the iconic line “all men are created equal”, immediately appeals to the human desire for Liberty, and a yearning for the values of freedom and equality to emerge in the world is immediately felt by both Union troops and future responders. Lincoln further utilises the anti-thesis, “The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here”, to raise permanent and everlasting images of sacrifice for the ideals which his symbolic nation represents- freedom and equality- inspiring all audiences to similarly fight for moral progress. The epistrophe of ‘people’ in “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth” re-enforces the image of human liberation. Combined with the juxtaposition of the moralistic ‘perish’ with the idea of ‘birth’, Lincoln simultaneously inspires and burdens Union troops to persevere in defending the nation- a living, evolving and ever-changing…

Our movement may be one of a few days duration and full of pleasure - and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. Not my will, but thine 0 God, be done. If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing - perfectly willing - to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt.…

My brothers and sisters united, I beg of you! Harken, and allow me to explain a case in which the American Crisis is evident to us. Will we only allow for more pointless pain and sacrifice? Will we all sit by while our brothers and sisters of liberty fall for us? Will we progressively grow far from the determination and integrity of our past? When will we stand? When will we unite again?…

The ‘Preferential Option for the Poor’ aims to “create conditions that take care of those who are suffering” (Chris, 2013). Caring for the poor is not an individual’s task, but rather the community’s responsibility to create a society in which everyone can not only survive but to flourish.…

In the recent turn of events and in a time of nuclear propaganda, the world stands at a particular threshold. In this time and position, strong, potent and inviolable steps and decisions need to be taken. This is aimed not necessarily to prevent a potential nuclear war but to bring the world to a state where open dialogues, sessions and treaties are followed.…

Recently I read an article by Hal Pepinsky titled Peacemaking in the classroom. This article is all about how Mr. Pepinsky used conflict resolution and peacemaking in a college setting. To understand where he is coming from in this article a little background is needed. Mr. Pepinsky is a college professor who taught a class for second year criminal justice majors. He thought this class would be a great place to experiment with peacemaking and conflict resolution. He started this by throwing out the traditional grading scale and changing it to a pass or fail. Although he was laughed out of a university for this thought process, he found his footing with a different idea. When at a new school he started with a new system.…

Some say that peace is not the absence of war, that it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, a disposition for confidence. While others who agree say that it is not the absence of war but the presence of justice. If you ask me, I’d tell you that both are right, but what happens when we cannot have peace through negotiations and agreements? What happens when peace cannot be attained through peaceful means? Ever heard of it takes two to tango? You can want to be diplomatic all you want but if the other side is not reasonable then you can’t force them to come to a diplomatic agreement. And you cannot always look the other way. They tried that before with a guy called Hitler, and look where that got us. I like the quote "all it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing"…
