Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is an abundance of several different cultures. It is valued because it gives society an opportunity to view and experience other cultures outside of the traditional norm of textbook perceptions. It gives us an opportunity to understand and respect different cultures and possibly correct misconceptions from stereotypes that we have been accustomed to.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s culture and identity is normal and correct. It is detrimental because it can lead one to believe another cultures way of life is abnormal or inferior to theirs. It may cause resistance in learning techniques because ethnocentrism may cause disrespect and the unwillingness to bother learning about another culture.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Emigration is leaving one country to settle into another. Immigration is the act of settling into a new country. Prior to becoming and actual immigrant of a particular country, one must first emigrate from their home country. Immigrants usually find themselves to be a minority in the new country.

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

Groups of people are identified by race, political view, culture, pay scale and religious beliefs. Any of these groups can have a variation of different races and cultures.

5. Why do people label and group other people?

People use labels to identify a specific group of people. Labeling is not limited to one’s race. It can vary from sexual preference to disabilities. It can be used to prevent people from engaging is certain activities.

6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain.

Culture is concept. It is not limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds because there many different characteristics which include language, communication patterns and religious beliefs. Cultures are constantly changing and cannot be labeled one specific race or ethnicity.
