Diversity and Race Today

Diversity and race have played a big part of our history and as a society we can learn and grow from this experience. Hispanic and American Latino or Mexican heritage have experienced many hardships during the immigration period to the United States. They originally came here in search of better jobs and housing but found that difficult when trying to gain citizenship. Some have lived here illegally forcing them to be sent back to their homeland. Because of this, many Hispanic people are looked upon as illegal aliens and treated as outsiders.

For example, the Muslim and Arab people came to American by following the Spanish Muslims. Earlier, Spanish Muslims followed people into America and made impressions at a world fair, help in Philadelphia, St Louis and Chicago. This is where most people got the first experience of the Muslim culture. Another example would be the Asian Americans. Their immigration is thought to be the most recent of all cultures. Only about 17,000 total came here from 1820-1965. They had a hard time as the supreme court ruled that Asian Americans could not become citizens because they were not White. The immigration laws for the Asian Americans began to drop and the more of the skilled population were allowed in the United States. As mentioned above, the biggest issue here would be the social status. Since immigration, Hispanics have been forced to take meaningless jobs often working for penny’s on a dollar, they are considered a dime a dozen when it comes to workers. They will work in almost any kind of condition and live in whatever housing they can find, often with many people in the same household. Because of this, people have always judged this race and will probably always continue to do so. Also, the Spanish dialect also plays a part here. Speaking Spanish has always been a big part of the racism suffered. Many people believe that they should speak English if they choose to live here. This will continue until something changes and people become more accepting of

Mexican Americans actually constitute a complicated case. They were originally indigenous to North America, became a colonized people, then, as a result of the war between Mexico and the United States and the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo (1848), they lost their land. They had been colonized and, as a result of the war, they became immigrants to the United States. Blauner believed that there are two types of minority groups, one on each end of the spectrum and positions in the between the extremes. These enclaves and middle minorities were often immigrants and had more opportunities than past colonized minority groups did when carving out places for themselves in their new society (Blauner, 1972).…

In today’s society, one has to be culturally competent and sensitive to diversity issues in order to understand others. The reasons for this are to broaden one's worldview of others and be more open-minded, increase one's awareness of others' identities and cultures, as well as increasing one's knowledge of different ethnicities, races, and cultures. This allows someone to work with people from different backgrounds and be more accepting of the various cultures and people we will have to work with.…

The sources of this prejudice and discrimination is employers as well as general population. Hispanics and Latinos are looked upon as different especially if they were not born in the US. It is human nature to try and categorize the surrounding world. Science created a classification system in order to visualize the similarities between animals and plant life. The problem with this system occurs when one does not fit into a specific place. Even amongst themselves, humans have tried to assort themselves based on outward appearances, but many people fail to comprehend how diverse the human race truly is. Throughout history, variances in skin color, hair type and facial structures have been used to distinguish between types of people; among these, is the labels placed on each ethnicity. The ‘Hispanic’ group is one of the largest populated ethnicities with multiple countries that fitting into it. However, each nation, is completely…

Although the economic bad times have dampened a lot of energy, it sends the message that if pushed too far, the powerless will defend themselves. Being someone who has not personally suffered this injustice in the Latino community I can reference my own experiences with difficulty adjusting to this country. As a Muslim in this time I feel the need to “hide” or not draw much attention to my faith or where I come from. It feels like if I were to be more open with who I am people would be inclined to think a certain way about me. Racism is still alive and seeing history and how these people lost their fear because they got to a point where they also needed to be validated as human beings that deserve respect and all the opportunities in this country gives me…

America is a place of diversity also known as a “melting pot.” There are many different cultures and people that live in this society. America’s diversity comes from a long history of migration. With many cultures migrating each culture went through a particular struggle to thrive in America. It is also accurate to say that all cultures that migrated went through the same struggle such as discrimination and prejudice. Puerto Ricans are U.S citizens that are allowed to travel freely to and from the mainland; however when thousands of Puerto Ricans immigrated to the United States they too had a similar struggle and had experienced adjustment issues. An issue present for Puerto Ricans in the United States is the issue of their Identity. In most…

It has been said throughout most of our history that America is the land of the free, where people from all over the world can live in peace and share ideals and culture. As a Hispanic citizen of this country, my take is a little bit different. Growing up in a mostly white dominated school district, it was uncomfortable and hard to fit in, especially when other children looked at you, then quickly look away as if they must have been seeing a figment of their imagination. Even now, I can still catch a few glares of prejudice just by going about my daily life, but it just motivates me to work even harder to become successful.…

Racial discrimination has a long history in the United States of America. It dates back to the days of slavery. Mexican descendants are migrating to the United States at an alarming rate. The culture that the Mexicans experience in their own country is very different from the culture they experience upon arriving in the United States of America. The U. S. Census Bureau created the label “Hispanic” for convenience. Some people of Spanish descent think of themselves as “Hispanic” and others prefer the term “Latino”; however, most identify with a particular country, such as Cuba, Argentina, or Spain (Macionis 2006)…

Diversity: something of a contrast, another opinion, or a different state of mind. Diversity is different strengths and weaknesses, different opinions, and different ideas. Without diversity, our entire planet would be a boring place. No unique cultures, no trendy clothing stores, no special restaurants, no interesting books written or movies released, and no special relationships or unique job opportunities. Diversity is our natural ambitions, hopes, and dreams.…
