The concept of Diversity and obtaining its 'true' understanding continues to shape and reshape organizational culture globally. Article written by R. Roosevelt Thomas on Redefining Diversity, broadens the general knowledge of diversity within the workplace and our everyday lives. In fact, in the early 1990s studies were done to determine the meaning of diversity. For example, in 1997 the National Naval Research Council defined diversity as the presence of a significant number of women, members of underrepresented racial groups, and persons with disabilities throughout the organization (National Research Council Staff. Building a Diverse Workforce: Scientists and Engineers in the Office of Naval Research. Washington, DC, USA: National Academies Press, 1997. p viii. ) Although a general relative definition, R. Roosevelt Thomas provided a more in depth understanding of diversity and indicates in his article that diversity is no longer about the crucial distinctions between groups, but is the elements that encompasses both the differences and similarities of employees (Understanding and Managing Diversity, pg ___.) thus, creating a diversity mixture within corporations. For me, it is surprising to adjust to the notion that diversity can in fact relate to the similarities and/or qualities of constituencies. This helps to eliminate the thought process that diversity is one dimensional.…

Diversity is way more than what meets the eye. Just by looking at this picture most people would say that it is a group of African American women standing together and that no diversity exists. However what most people fail to realize is that diversity surpasses an individual race and skin tone. In this picture you have Jasmine who loves children and is studying to be a child psychologist. Then you have Kayla who enjoys horseback riding and the outside life. Next you have Ayoluwa who wants to be an architect and develop many buildings. Diversity also has a lot to do with an individual’s personality, traits, characteristics, and also behaviors. Providing diversity in the workplace is about embracing everyone’s ideas, thoughts, and ways that they handle different situations. Developing a diverse workplace that focuses on the inclusion of employees is a key component to the success and growth of an organization. There are many reasons as to why a company should inaugurate and push for cultural diversity in the workplace. When a company is diverse, it portrays a sense that the company distinguishes and appreciates the variances that occur in multiple backgrounds and also traits exhibited from others. Having a diverse work environment throughout a company profits from the standpoints of each individual. It is important to remember that having a diverse as well as inclusive atmosphere does not happen in just one day. This is a process and journey that permits for the growth personally by each employee. “Workplace diversity preserves the quality of employees’ relationships with their co-workers and their supervisors." (Mayhew,R., 2012) When the workplace is diverse, there is never a dull moment because bit and pieces are combined from each culture to enhance the organization. Diversity allows individuals to give their input and techniques when it comes to accomplishing task. It functions as a learning experience to the different…

Diversity is basically defined as acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing, and celebrating differences among people with respect for age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status (Esty, et al., 1995). In work place, I will personally define it as difference between people working in an organization; it could be their ideas, beliefs, language or even their culture. These factors affect one’s way of thinking, and can even determine their work performance. Taking for instance lateness at work, it is obviously a bad working habit but in some parts of Africa or Asia, it is a normal to be fifteen or twenty minutes late, this habit is one of the worse working habits in America. That is cultural difference. Workplace diversity could also refer to human quality or ability that is different form our own example. Workers sometimes treat or favor co-workers who they are more related or have some affliction to in a nicer way than other people. Workplace diversity also happens when companies hire employees from various backgrounds and experiences. “Many companies see workplace diversity as an investment toward building a better business. Although workplace diversity provides many benefits, it also poses many challenges to employees and managers. To reap the benefits of workplace diversity, employees…
