Diversity in the United States
They say their daily lives are enriched by the diversity of individuals, groups and cultures, where the exchange of the diverse stimulates them creatively and mentally. It has opened their eyes to see the United States is a huge melting pot that consist of people of all races, genders, and ethnic backgrounds. There is no single race or ethnicity which makes up our society. They believe every person regardless of their sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or skin color should have the same opportunities as everyone else and not be discriminated or stereotyped, because they are different. They also see, what people from the past have endured to make sure their children have a better life and opportunities that were not there for them. America still has a long way to go before everyone can live in harmony, but the country is on the right path. By feeling this way, they have learned a great deal about their own racial, ethnic and cultural history. Their ancestors came to this country during the famine in Ireland and were met with the same discrimination they were suffering in their country where they were known as the “white negroes.” They were faced with negative stereotyping that was very similar to that of enslaved Africans and African Americans, though not enslaved they faced a status as low as that of recently-freed slaves and competed with them for the same low-wage, low-status jobs. Over decades, they have fought for their rights and are now are known and have the status of being white. On the lighter side, it also suggested the term “paddy wagon” came from the fact Irishman made up a large percentage of the officers of early police forces in America. The word paddy is a derogatory slang for the name Patrick. In addition, all that have fought and are still fighting to be seen as who are they are and not by the color of their skin; they just may get their answer. Due to interracial partnerships, people will have a variety of ethnic background by the year 2050. Froelich (2014) As PolicyMic said, “in a matter of years we will have Tindered, OkCupid-ed and otherwise sexed ourselves into a giant amalgamated mega-race.” What does this mean for racism? Hopefully, it means the end, but one can only wish. They are still influenced by family and society, which means maybe they do not claim a race here or there. With that said, they must celebrate the interracial mixing it represents an evolving America which will be rich in diversity. With this diversity will come many challenges? One is Americans must rid themselves of all hyphens, we are one country and need to be one people. They need to see themselves not as victims, but as equals to turn the animosity into acceptance. Cultural pluralism tends to foster resentment from the indigenous culture towards a new coming culture. All Americans must get rid of the hatred, separation of ethnic backgrounds and become united with each other after all we are the United States and must be a united people. They have already seen trends in the last decade, in the 2007 Super Bowl it was the first time in the history of the game that both teams had an African America coach. In 2001 Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House it was the first time a woman held the position. Although, these are great achievements to celebrate in the 21st century, it is discouraging it took so long. These are all benefits of a diverse country, where we do not see color, religious beliefs, and ethnic backgrounds, but that anyone is capable of anything regardless of what walk of life they are from. To say nothing of the media, that contributes to the perpetuation of stereotypes and prejudice via television and newspapers. An example is the way the media represents the Muslims as they are all a threat and bad people. This causes people who are weak to stereotype and be...
