I have over sixteen-years experience working directly with culturally and linguistically diverse community members and have gained a sound understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. I possess excellent management, community engagement, research and communication skills and strongly believe the experiences I have gained from previous work roles, along with my desire to advocate reconciliation, makes me perfectly suited…

Diversity literally means difference. Diversity recognizes that though people have things in common with each other, they are also different and unique in many ways. Diversity therefore consists of visible and non-visible factors, which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style in addition to the characteristics that are protected under discrimination legislation in terms of race, disability, gender, religion and belief, sexual orientation and age. By recognizing and understanding our individual differences and embracing them, and moving beyond simple tolerance, we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued.…

2010 further states ‘Health care services should strive to achieve the state where every individual is able to achieve their full potential as a human beings’, before adding ‘this brings about the total wellbeing of their community’ (p.64). Aboriginal culture is intrinsic throughout society and is embodied within communities around the nation (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Inc. 2015). It is therefore important health service practitioners who wish to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have an understanding of Aboriginal culture in order to engage effectively and ensure equal treatment (Eckermann et al. 2010, p.64). Cultural identity is a strength these practitioners should posses when working within the Aboriginal community, as this influences the way we work and apply integrity, which in turn strengthens inclusion and our understanding regarding health (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Inc.…
