Diversity Class Reflection
Coming into this Diversity class specifically, my initial thought was that, I already knew that police officers are now dealing with more and more diversity issues on a daily bases than ever before. During our classes, I learned a few important points that will help me become a more diverse police officer. One of the first subjects we learned in this class was the idea of certain powers and privileges that exist. We learned how being a police officer means having control over your own life and the lives of others. Powers we contain should be used for reaping of the good and not be to abused. From the privilege perspective of agents I knew it still existed but not to the extent that I have learned. Another point we learned in class are the …show more content…
Because of the media, I can say that I’m Homophobic, to some degree. I have accepted the gay community as a part of society and I do not even feel uncomfortable around them, but I’m still not at the level of supporting their beliefs and their rights. Even though, I’m not at level of supporting gays and lesbian rights, I still feel I will be able to fulfill my duties as a police officer, when in contact with gays and lesbians. I do not have a negative opinion about them I just do not have the same beliefs. Also the presentation by the lesbian was really informative of how the gay community is lived and their views on life. I believe that the obvious area of content that we learned in class that I need to learn more about is the gay, lesbian and bisexual community. Even though I do not have a negative opinion about the gay community, and I do not even feel uncomfortable around them, I still do not really support their beliefs or rights. I’m trying to pursue a career that needs individuals who are totally unbiased with any group in society. We are taught in class that in order for me accomplish my dream of becoming a police officer; I need to learn to support the gay, lesbian and bisexual community. I need to learn their history, the efforts they have made in order for them to live comfortably in society. I need to learn about the struggles they endured for them to be accepted. I feel if I learn and understand all this, it will be easier for me to conduct my future

    Well focusing on educating firefighters on how to work effectively in a diverse environment helps a department prevent discrimination and promote inclusiveness. There is evidence that managing a diverse work force well can contribute to increased productivity. All I know is when someone needs medical attention or when a building goes up in flames, people do not care about the race or the sex of the firefighters who drag them to safety, or who keeps them stable long enough before they go to the hospital. Competence is all that matters. That said, it does not mean race should be ignored.     Throughout history the role of women and racial and ethnic minorities has been restrained. This causes the inability to move up in ranking and limiting the ability to perform in certain jobs. Being a woman or having a different racial background can also cause stereotypes. For example, a Hispanic officer may be given a Hispanic area to patrol, due to his background. The need for minorities and women in law enforcement is undoubtedly true. Unfortunately, the US has as extended history of job discrimination that involves the prejudicial treatment of people in the workforce on the basis of their race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, or religion.
