Diversity And Embracing Differences
What is diversity? Diversity is embracing differences between people and respecting and evaluating other as individuals . As a Vietnamese-American female raised in the U.S by an immigrant mother, I was fortunate enough to have encountered very few racist comments or act towards myself or anyone around me until November 10, 2016, two days after Trump was elected. Like any other weekend, I sometimes traveled to UMD to visit my boyfriend. I initially thought my boyfriend’s roommate was kind because he always seemed welcoming when I would come visit. Things began feel a little uncomfortable when I found out that his roommate voted for Trump ; a candidate that I strongly disagree with. However, I still respected his roommate's right to free expression, to vote for whomever he chose.
One encounter changed everything. My boyfriend and I went out to grab some dinner with his friends, including his roommate. After we finished eating, we decided to go play pool. During the game, everything seemed to go well until I congratulated my boyfriend's roommate for shooting the ball into the hole. His friends began to giggle about a comment that my boyfriend's roommate had made towards me. , I didn't clearly hear the comment that he made, but one of my boyfriend's friends was giggling and said, "Dude, that was racist". From that day on, I promised to myself that from now on, I would stand up for myself and for others. To love and forgive people even though they're not the same as I am or who don’t share the same ideas. To also not base on one person's actions and make assumption about the whole community as I'm sure UMD has plenty of good people. For me, diversity is what is going to be what makes America great

For the next couple of days, people would point at me in the halls, or yell stuff at me like, “Hey Sharon! You going to marry one of them blacks?!?!” or “Black-lover!”. I didn’t care though. I had stood up for what I thought was right and I am proud for it. On the 24th, the president sent Army’s men and guards for the blacks so they could join us in class. I have a few classes with them. Ironically, they are now in my English class. When I entered English, I immediately walked up to the blacks and started welcoming them. I sat with them from then on in class and now they are some of my closest friends. They all are very happy that I stood up for them. I have to do it often still when some of the football jocks tease them. But I was able to defend them. And that’s all that…

In today’s society, one has to be culturally competent and sensitive to diversity issues in order to understand others. The reasons for this are to broaden one's worldview of others and be more open-minded, increase one's awareness of others' identities and cultures, as well as increasing one's knowledge of different ethnicities, races, and cultures. This allows someone to work with people from different backgrounds and be more accepting of the various cultures and people we will have to work with.…

Harvey and Allard define diversity “as the ways in which people differ that may affect their organizational experience in terms of performance, motivation, communication, and inclusion” (2009, pg. 1). According to Schaefer, cultural diversity comes from a mix of different groups. Racial groups, religious groups, ethnic groups, gender groups, and cultural patterns. These groups then form subordinate and dominate groups in society (Schaefer, 2011).…

Everyone has had at least one experience in life where he or she felt like “other” or perceived someone else as “other”. Some of us have had experiences where we have made a connection with someone who was “other”. Merriam-Webster defines “other” as “one considered by members of a dominant group as alien, exotic, threatening, or inferior (as because of different racial, sexual, or cultural characteristics). This is someone who is perceived by the group as different and not belonging in some way.…

One blind spot I think I had at the start of the semester was the idea about disability. When you mention disability, I can honestly say that I always thought of the physical forms of disability. So when it came to helping accommodate for disabilities I would naturally think of things like wheelchair ramps or special seating in the offices. I never considered the fact that “invisible” disabilities were present in the workplace. Now when you say disability I think of not only the physical but also the mental and learning disabilities that can affect people within the workplace.…

Throughout the paper called People like Us by David Brooks he addresses the fact the United Sates does not have diversity. Brook states the fact that most Americans tend to live, be friends and fall in love with people who are similar to each other in many way including education, income and interests. However, Americans tend to promote diversity even though most Americans do not leave their comfort zone to make new relationships with people with different views. Brooke states “People want to be around others who are roughly like themselves”(Brooke, line 3). Americans tend to like being with people similar to themselves even while promoting…

The professional role of the class teacher is continually changing. It has long been expected that teachers should effectively accommodate all children regardless of their needs, with strategies and practice differing within and between settings to ensure that all children learn. However, recently more specific and detailed guidance has emerged that focuses on understanding the range of children’s needs (Hanko 2003). Instead of expecting children to ‘come up to standard’ or otherwise be segregated, an emphasis is now on schools to adapt and be flexible in order to accommodate, fully integrate and include every child (Tassoni 2003). Every Child Matters (ECM) details how it is the legal responsibility of the class teacher to ensure its five outcomes ensure inclusive pratice for all pupils. Evidence of this is apparent within the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS), where meeting and understanding the diverse needs of children is highlighted. Based on the Childcare Act (2006), the EYFS aims to provide every child with the best possible start in life and with support to fulfil their potential (DCSF 2008b). The statutory guidance states:…

    The Meaning of Diversity

The true meaning of valuing diversity is to respect and enjoy a wide range of cultural and individual differences, thereby including everybody,” according to Andrew J. DuBrin. People are being discriminated because of how they differ from others. A person who had a different color of skin would be treated unfairly. A person who had a sexual interest to the opposite sex would be bullied. A person who had a different way of religion would be teased. People in a diversity group would be expected of others, and people would treat them differently. However, there are people who have worked for greater diversity in American and World history. The true meaning of diversity is to respect our and others’ similarities and differences.…
