Abstract
In this paper I will be discussing whether diversity is or not being considered in a reading titled “Bloomberg Businessweek Apologizes for 'Racist' Cover”. The cover of “Bloomberg BusinessWeek” is causing quite the stir, it is stated that the cover they have released on one of their latest magazine came off racist to some. Throughout this paper I will be sharing whether or not I feel that there a problem with what was displayed in the reading or is someone just overreacting. I will also be discussing if I think things should or should not be done differently.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek Magazine cover is causing quite the stir, it is stated that the cover that was released on one of their latest magazine came off racist to some. This resulted into a Bloomberg BusinessWeek apology, the cover that shows an African American and a Latino person(s) wallowing in cash, drew offense at what many saw as racist depictions. On the cover diversity was displayed but only to a certain extent, the cover did not display diversity correctly, if so there would have been an image of each race. Diversity means different views of actions, problems or opinions so instead of just using African American or Hispanics; the use of other races should be present. I believe that the writer should have been a little more professional in his choice of cover piece. I do not believe that anyone is overacting, if no one acted on this then it would just fly by like everything is fine and dandy. I am glad that someone acted upon this issue because if not, an apology or change would have not gone into place or said. The author Andres Guzman states “that he meant no offense by it” which resulted in Bloomberg Business apologizing and stating, “things should and would have been done differently if they could do it over again”. As much fault, as this is the artist

Reinforcing identity values, diversity, and notions of intersectionality, are all core issues facing contemporary society. In this current national political climate, the need for accepting diversity and valuing differences is at the top of the societal list. With movement after movement sprouting, people are looking for socially powerful leaders to lead them in the direction of societal and political reform. When minorities examine media sources and view the faces that represent their country, the rarity of individuals who share the same qualities is frightening. It is not simply about the diversity of the physicality, but about the diversity of those who are willing to enact a positive social change. It is to have…

Think about being at the grocery store at the check out line where the magazines are located. How often are African Americans or minority cover models showcased on the cover of magazines? Not often. This issue is what David Carr presents in his essay, gOn Covers of many Magazines a Full Racial Palette Is Still Rare.h Carr feels that blacks and other minorities are not represented enough on magazine covers. Carr supports this dynamic argument through the use of pathos, ethos and logos and because of this; I also feel minorities are underrepresented in the magazine industry. If blacks are on covers, they are main stream like Tiger Woods or Serena Williams, or they are African Americans who have taken on a euro-centric look to be accepted by mainstream society.…

As I watched the Sherman-Andrews interview over and over through the likes of YouTube and WorldStarHipHop, I couldn’t help but think back to the 2008 Vogue cover featuring Lebron James and model Gisele Bundchen. The cover, criticized as being racially insensitive, showed Lebron James “roaring” while holding the graceful ‘damsel-in-distress’ Gisele. Obviously, the cover’s similarities to the popular ‘King Kong’ visuals were more than coincidental. This time however, LeBron was replaced with Richard Sherman, and Gisele with Andrews. This juxtaposition perfectly exemplifies society’s perceptions of primitive blacks and the civil whites. It didn’t take long for this firestorm to reach the likes of social media. While many saw the Sherman-Andrews exchange as mere comedy, the racial undertones began to creep up like weeds. The racial epithets ranged from the somewhat conservative…

I appreciated the commentary that political correctness has a downside that is hindering us from connecting with others. I think our current political climate is an excellent example of how we can use these scripts as weapons and a way to further polarize ourselves from one another. I also like the idea and agree that we need to teach people, and in this case employees, on how to handle diversity-related issues and manage them responsibly and professionally without ignoring them or stuffing them away. Where my concerns come up is that I think the scenarios in this article feel very white collar and also assume an open and possibly flat culture and organization. While I agree someone from a minority group might need to examine their own assumptions/reality, to put the burden and risk that this individual must come forward and start tackling some of these issues is not an easy ask in many environments. I also think not all individuals have meaningful networks they can tap into for support and I imagine not all environments will welcome this exploration at all in the first place. There is a level of risk-taking here that I think is still easier for a majority group to participate in. The scenarios presented also represented employees who seemed to be in experienced roles with a relatively equal level of power. How does this play out when a more junior employee is having this experience with their boss? What does this look like if English is a second language and articulating your reality is a challenge? To be fair to the article, there is discussion about leadership and the need for senior leadership to buy into the principles, get familiar with other social identities, create a safe culture, and model the behavior being asked. Without this in place, I doubt this learning could actualize in a meaningful way in any…

This article was about how racial discrimination is still very much present across America. Conversations about race are more critical now than they ever have been because young people gather their facts from what they hear from their elders. Many young people think racism has gone away but in reality the issue is still going on. Black students are not able to perform their best in school because they do not get equal curriculum as white people. During the civil rights movement, the focus was on rights for the black men but now the rights of black woman are becoming more visible. This article also highlights how we have come very far as a nation. Many African Americans have become very influential across America with their roles as authors…
