Being an exchange student from Italy, a country that could probably be defined as the opposite of Singapore, diversity is becoming part of my everyday life. In fact, since I arrived here, everything has changed. In a positive or in a negative way? Nobody knows: That’s the deep meaning of diversity. Indeed, this is a pretty ambiguous concept, that on the one hand arouses mystery and fear, while on the other hand curiosity and fascination. Moreover, we can talk about diversity in various shades, from being simply different to being totally opposed, and each of these shades may have a different interpretation depending on who perceives them. So then, we can also define diversity as a result of our own perception, where for this latter word we mean “a process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment”. As a matter of fact, our mind is always in need of organizing reality into simple concepts from which to discern diversity. Having said that, it is possible to emphasize infinite dimensions by which people can be different. Indeed, by examining the surface-level diversity and deep-level diversity, we denote some different but substantial features. The first level of diversity is typified by extrinsic characteristics (i.e demographics features, such as gender, race, age, ethnicity, and so forth), that do not necessarily explain the different ways people think or feel but may just suggest certain stereotypes. The second type instead regards intrinsic characteristic (such as values, personality and work preferences of an individual) concerning the important role of human deep relationships. Most of the time, people focus on the first level of diversity because it strikes us most at a glance. However, it may happen that people from different races share the same opinion or, alternatively, that people of the same race have completely divergent opinions.
