Diverse Self Reflection
I exceed the standard in the “diverse students” category. Throughout the semester, I have effectively interacted with students, teachers, and other school personnel at all times. The Salvation Army provided me with the perfect opportunity to do just this. I was constantly in an environment where students, peers, and teachers surrounded and I had to effectively communicate with them to not only help myself succeed, but also the students. While working with students, I also consistently demonstrated a positive regard for the learners as individuals. This was put into play mostly in the homework room at the Salvation Army. Trying to assist multiple students at one time was one of the most difficult aspects of this experience, just because each

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with students of different ethnicities, different socio-economic backgrounds and special education. I have also worked with high school students of various sexual orientations. Working with different people has shaped my identity by becoming aware that we are all different and that is what truly makes society beautiful. It has shaped my self-awareness by connecting me with my true desire in life. That is why I extremely passionate to help children and young adolescents achieve success. My experiences have broadened my understanding of the role in social work in society because I feel one can do so much for others. I have gained enough experience, which allows me to believe that I have the flexibility and adaptability to work with different populations. My previous experience has influenced my understanding of and commitment to social justice because it is sad to witness children with a 30,000-word gap deficit come into my classroom as opposed to children from higher social economic statuses who have a larger array of vocabulary. Then as they get older we see this gap widened regardless of ethnicity based on social economic status and students who are learning English as a second language. I want all children to have the same access to an amazing…

The average David Douglas High School student has to hear the word “diversity” at least 100 times throughout assemblies, student elections, and announcements via intercom. Let me explain. David Douglas High School is one of the biggest and most diverse schools in Oregon. In the halls of DDHS, you’ll never meet the same person twice in one day. Our school’s diversity is reflected in our clubs, too: Asian American Youth Leadership Club, Black Student Union, Bhutanese Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, Latino Club, Somali Club… the list goes on. This sanctuary high school never made me feel left out as a minority.…

This article, “The RU-486 Abortion Pill Should Be Available to Women”, was written by Laura Fraser in 2001 for the Greenhaven Press. The issue involved with this article is whether or not the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S.. The conclusion Fraser came up with was yes, the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S., and for plenty of reasons. For example, if mifepristone becomes available, it will remove political and practical barriers so women can get abortions and physicians will not have to perform complete abortions. Also, 54% of all…

Throughout my experiences, I have gained insight into what makes an effective and respected leader. Correspondingly, I have learned that maintaining group focus while avoiding dominating every decision is vital to have fruitful administrative endeavors. These are the communication competencies that I feel strong because I feel that I already have an exposure to many diverse cultures. When I was still in the military, criticism is always part of my job. At first, I took those feedback personally that I couldn’t concentrate in my work. I felt like I was being judged. But then realized, that those opinions really matter and improved my overall communication with my superiors and junior personnel. The military offers many types of culture, talents and intelligence, and being exposed to this type of setting was very overwhelming. I made sure that I apply my own culture teachings when I make my decisions. I always relate my situations to other people that way it is unbiased and fair.…

The most significant thing I learned last week was that I am able to take any given situation, as simple or complex it can be, and be able to analyze it thoroughly. By utilizing the IDDP (Identify, Differentiate, Determine, Predict) Structured Thinking Process, I am able to identify problems, recognize situations from what I have learned in class, differentiate an action appropriate or in appropriate, make a prediction, and I can determine what should be done in order to have a positive outcome based on all the information that I collect.…

After completing my first semester of college, I have found a special drive within myself to do more and more. I was fortunate enough to seek help from individuals who also see the diversity barrier as a problem and ask them to educate me on why this is a problem and how can we as individuals do our part. Being from a city like Los Angeles, where we can find an exhausting amount of different cultures, we would expect to have many different faces in multiple professions. Instead we see the minimal. I attended a conference at the UC Irvine School of Medicine that really opened my eyes to the problems of diversity in medicine. This is a conference that I will forever be grateful that I attended. Here I listened to speakers of similar background…

Of the topics that I could choose from, I chose to discuss how to reduce poverty in the United States. Poverty in the United States has been something that I have been personally hearing about since I was a child. It has always been a topic during every Presidential debate that I can remember. While growing up, I have always pondered ways of helping others that were less fortunate than myself. This had led me to believe whole-heartedly that the poverty rate can be reduced through several avenues.…

Procrastination and typing are two challenges that concern me the most about my online learning. I sometimes important things off until last minute typically because I get busy doing other things and forget about them .I usually think about them at the last minute and try to hurry to get things done. Since I have begun my online learning I have tried to stay on top of things instead of waiting until the last minute to get it done as I normally would. I feel that I am a strong willed and I can get anything done that I set my mind to do. I have planned a certain time each day to study and do homework to keep from getting behind. Transitioning from private middle school to public high school, I was exposed to greater diversity through my peers’ unique cultures and backgrounds than ever before. Growing up, I was taught to accept and respect everyone regardless of age, race, gender, and sexuality. I enjoy listening to others share their life stories and experiences that have molded them into the person they are today. Living on a college campus next year will broaden my exposure to diversity even more. I am excited about meeting new people and learning new things but also look forward to sharing my life experiences with new friends. I have had the opportunity to do mission work in multiple states and Puerto Rico. Through my travels to Puerto Rico to help the community…

During my college level education, I have been very intrigued by the field of science. Specifically, the subject which interests me the most is microscopic molecules and organisms. The class that I believe sparked my interest was my second semester of general biology at Paradise Valley Community College. During this class, I was introduced to the intricate details of cells and the idea that microscopic organisms outnumber all other living things on Earth. This class also provided me with information about viruses, which quickly became most interesting topic for me.…

My second grade class of 2016-2017 is the class I will be using to demonstrate that I have shown growth in the Diversity Standard. I cannot say that I had an ethnically diverse class because 98.5% of our school population are Hispanic as well as myself. Our school is located in a very low-socioeconomic area. This school year 50% of my class are English Language Learners. My class also consists of 7 students with exceptionalities. (1 Autistic Student, 4 Gifted students, 1 Deaf student and 1 BI student) Seventy-three percent of my students were developed according to their TPRI/Tejas Lee Assessment by the middle of the school year. By implementing literacy centers I was able to work with small groups and made sure I service all of their needs.…
