Divergent And Tris
Q1 - In the film Divergent, a character I admire is Beatrice Prior or Tris. I admire her specifically because she is incredibly strong willed, brave, and dislikes showing weakness. This film is set in a futuristic Chicago, where the community is divided into 5 factions. Abnegation the selfless, Dauntless the brave, Eridute the intelligent, Condor the honest and Amity the peaceful. When all teenagers reach the age of 16, they are required to stay in the faction they were born into, or transfer to another faction, to stay for the rest of their lives. I believe that this is an absurd idea, mainly because the choice has to be made when still a teenager where this decision will decide the rest of your life. Tris was born into the faction of selflessness.

The importance of being Divergent is first introduced to Beatrice after she completes her Aptitude Test (which determines which faction a person should choose). Tori (the test manager) reports to her: “’My conclusion,’ she explains, ‘is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. People who get this result are…’ She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. ‘… are called … Divergent.’ She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. She walks around the side of the chair and leans in close to me. ‘Beatrice,’ she says, ‘under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important.’” The manner in which Tori says that Tris is a Divergent means that it is an extremely rare condition that changes the way people look at them, and this is meant that Tris would have to create her identity alone. Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless (selflessness and bravery respectively), it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four. After he and Tris exit the fear simulation room, he says: “’I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your…

On account of my own experiences (Yes, I know personal experience doesn’t trump truths) within the Millennial generation. This generation sings a song that is of a different tune than the one “The Newest Greatest Generation” suggests. When reflecting on where my peers are and are headed, I see a generation that is filled with persons of high character, creativity, and open mindedness. Not to say this isn’t a generation without flaws, as we have many, but unlike Stein, I wouldn’t hesitate to label this generation as altruistic, full of fervor, and philanthropy. As a reader it was difficult for me to believe the “truths” of this article, and easy for me to accept this as another case of social ageism, the “us vs them”…

In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Tris has to make the most important decision of her life by choosing a new faction. Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.…

The government in Equality’s world is very controlling but also fragile. When Equality brings his invention to the house of the scholars, they reel back in fear but then also anger. This is because they can demand a lot of anything but if something happens and someone discovers a secret, the government can be overthrown with a lot of support. This type of discovery is what they fear most. The government is so afraid of any variation that they choose who goes together for unmentionable purposes. This just shows that any slight difference in the system can bring the entirety of Equality’s government. The government in Divergent is not as controlling as the one Equality has come to know and to grow up with. This is because they only suggest what faction one should go into but the individual ultimately has the choice to go into whatever faction they please. This shows it's weakness of letting individuality exist when they want everyone the same or really close to the same. They let people mingle and interact with one another some of the time though not outside of the faction. This is how they are giving people freedom and personalities rather than nothing at…

This is both a good thing and a bad thing because they let their natural instinct to do what’s right become prominent in their thoughts but instead of helping their society become stronger they, “…walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back” (Le Guin par. 14). The ones that decide to leave the city realize that, “…they, like the child, are not free” (Le Guin par. 12). From this realization sprouts the decision for the man or woman to leave the city forever thereby turning their back on the culture that they once lived in. Though it is a good thing that the person’s conscious returns and becomes prominent in them, the argument must be raised that instead of shunning the culture, that same person could instead fight to release the child and hopefully give the child a shot at joy in…

Adolescence is a critical time in our lives, where we are first introduced to the real world and prepare ourselves for the future. Whether it be a teen who joins a new group of friends to experiment what it’s like to be an outcast, a teen who runs away and gets out of his comfort zone to figure out how he will deal with growing up, or a hermaphrodite who learns to accept who he is and is not willing to change himself to be normal. In the course of recent changes to the context and content of youth transitions the notion of citizenship has come to the fore as a means of discussing young people’s move into independent membership of society. Youth is an expansive moment, and young people moving towards social majority invariably feel the need for room to nurture and explore their emergent sense of themselves as individual people. However, children and young people are often seen as immature and lack of capability to participate in adult world, they have become semi-citizen overall. In this paper, I would like to discourse the different views of children and young people’s active civic engagement and their participation in decision-making in organizations. I will address Cohen’s (2005) two views of children in this paper, which is paternal and minor theory. I will also discuss the key issues that emerge in considering either children’s or young people’s civic engagement. Lastly, I will focus on the education engagement of children and young people to better address the issues.…
