Distribution System
The Darby Company manufactures and distributes meter used to measure electric power consumption. The company started with a small production plant in El Paso and gradually built a customer base throughout Texas. A distribution center was established in Ft. Worth, Texas later, as business expanded to the north; a second distribution center was established in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The El Paso plant was expanded when the company began marketing its meters in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. With the growth of the West Coast business, the Darby Company opened a third distribution center in Las Vegas and just two years ago opened a second production plant in San Bernardino, California. Manufacturing costs differ between the company's production plants. The cost of each meter produced at the El Paso plant is $10.50. The San Bernardino plant utilizes newer and more efficient; as a result, manufacturing costs are $.50 per meter less than at the El Paso plant. The company's rapid growth meant that not much attention was paid to the efficiency of the distribution system. Darby's management decided it is now time to address this issue. The cost of shipping a meter from each of the two plants to each of the three distribution centers is shown in Table 1 below. The quarterly production capacity is 30,000 meters at the older El Paso plant and 20,000 meters at the San Bernardino plant. Note that no shipments are allowed from the San Bernardino plant to the Ft. Worth distribution center. The company serves nine customer zones from the three distribution centers. The forecast of the number of meters needed in each customer zone for the next quarter is shown in Table 2.The cost per unit of shipping from each distribution center to each customer zone is given in Table 3. Note that some of the distribution centers cannot serve certain customer zones. In the current distribution system, demand at the Dallas, San Antonio,
Wichita, and Kansas City customer zones is satisfied by

The increase in supply shows that the best and optimal distribution pattern is Shanghai would ship 1500 units to warehouse 2. Shuzworld H would ship 300 units to Warehouse 1, and 1800 units to Warehouse 3. Finally, Shuzworld F would ship 2200 units to Warehouse 1. The additional units 1500 are shipped to a dummy warehouse, 1300 units are allocated to Shanghai and 200 units are allocated to Shuzworld H. Again, using the transportation model to implement this shipping plan would reduce the cost associated with shipping from Shuzworld F to Warehouse 3 which is the most expensive route. Additionally, increasing the supply units and storing them in a dummy warehouse decreases the transportation costs. By shipping the excess units to a dummy location does not increase the cost for the company. The transportation model finds the lowest cost by analyzing the different shipping methods.…

During the postclassical period from 600 to 1450 CE empires, such as the Tang dynasty in China and the Byzantine Empire, used new methods of equal land distribution in their societies. Each empire had very distinct methods for organizing the distribution of land in their empires. For the Tang dynasty land was distributed according to the equal field system while in the Byzantine empire land was given according to the theme system. The land distribution systems were designed to keep order by not allowing a large concentration of land towards certain families ,and how they were organized was at times according to the political system of the empire, as well as who the land was given by, who received the land and how. Both empires used these systems to provide stability for a short term. The equal field system in China became a foundation of stability and prosperity to rural areas. Also in the Byzantine empire the theme system made the empire stronger and able to expand. These systems got rid of possibilities of social tensions between those with great amounts of land and those with little.…

The values to be used in the evaluation for capital intensive manufacturing are direct materials at $5 per unit, direct labor at $6 per unit, a variable overhead of $3 per unit, and fixed manufacturing costs of $2,508,000. The values for material, labor, and overhead are summed to find the total variable cost of $14. The labor intensive values are direct materials at $5.50 per unit, direct labor at $8 per unit, a variable overhead of $4.50 per unit, and fixed manufacturing costs of $1,538,000. The research department of Martinez recommended an introductory price unit sales price of $30.
