Respect is a finicky thing. What is of the utmost respect to one, could be insulting and hurtful to another. All over the world we have different standards and expectations. Even in our own country, respect is an ever evolving concept. Racism is an unfair form of disrespect. One hundred fifty five years ago, the black slaves were freed, but life was still difficult. Segregation and racism popped up everywhere, schools, work, even drinking fountains. Everything was separate because blacks were “dirty”. 1863 may have changed the law of slavery, but little else. The African Americans pushed for equality, but even today that has not been accomplished. It was not till 1964 when segregation became illegal that it became hopeful. Taking care of yourself, not doing things you would regret. Disrespect also can be portraying yourself as slow, or foolish, when you are actually brilliant. Respect is an idea, and while we all interpret it a little bit differently, there are some main key points shared in all forms. Be considerate, and think. If everyone thought long and hard before a major act, I feel that many crises may have been averted. When people interpret respect differently, it can cause disagreements. While you could both be right, you are fighting over a concept. There can be no victor. Children in classrooms are shoved into cramped boxes of respect, and forced to obey to the confines of society. Often times, adults are very disrespectful of the children they are teaching respect to. As children learn from example, and by disrespecting them, you are creating a never ending cycle that ends with only losers. When they rebel they are shoved back into their boxes with more force and when they stop, they are rewarded. They are taught to be respectful of their elders, but not the people younger than them.
