The general treatment and health state of prisoners is of high concern. There is a constant pressure on prisons to keep staff to a minimum meaning there is a limited access to out-of-cell activity and means prisoners have no one to escort them from place to place. This could also result in visits being cancelled, which mentally isolates the prisoner even more, decreasing potential for social integration, and increasing the likelihood of familial breakdown. One of the most serious deficiencies in prison life is the lack of mental stimulation and preparation for life on the outside. The inhumanity considered in denying individuals of opportunities to exercise physically, it most certainly applies to the mental side too. This lack of mental activity most certainly results in internal isolation, contributing nothing to…
When tragic events occur, society often points to the people who carried out the crime itself. However, often times the orders may come from a superior authority, and the automatic override to be obedient kicks in. Especially in the military, obedience is a form of order and without it, there would be no organization or respect of one’s upper authorities. In Columbia Picture’s “A Few Good Men”, Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, is a lawyer defending two men being accused of the murder of Private First Class Santiago. In the movie, Kaffee along with Galloway searches for the truth to discover whether an illegal code red occurred, killing PFC Santiago. Within the movie are many examples of disobedience to authority, when it comes to respecting higher…
When there are million’s of people incarcerated throughout the United States, the ethical treatment of prisoner’s rights must be analyzed. Throughout the years many modifications have been made to accommodate inmates and preserve their basic human rights. Have we as a society done enough regarding the ethical treatment of prisoners or have we made their lives in prison too easy that it is no longer a punishment for them? There are many people in the United States who have strong feelings of what is right and wrong and fall on both sides of this question. Utilitarianism is the belief that moral rules should be choices made by a society to promote the happiness of its members (Mosser, 2010). Through the utilitarian view the argument could be made that these prisoners are being treated to good and not good enough. Utilitarianism gives an understandable, theoretical foundation for moral decision making. Prior to coming to a decision upon a course of action, the utilitarian is asked to consider its effects on the entire population over an infinite period of time (Mosser, 2010).…
The film begins by illustrating a reoccurring dream of Captain Marco which eventually is learned to be an actual event. In this dream, Captain Marco recalls a display which reveled the effectiveness of the conditioning of a squad of American Soldiers by communists of the USSR, China, and North Korea. The nine American soldiers were captured on patrol and conditioned, or brainwashed, for three days. Once their minds were under the control of the communist overseers a false account was constructed to enable Shaw to acquire prestige and clout among Americans. Being the step son of Senator John Iselin and a Medal of Honor recipient would enable Shaw to exist as an ideal communist sleeper mole, without any suspicions; as well as the opportunity for advancement in a position which would exacerbate his infiltration into American society. Furthermore, the story could be used to explain the absence of the soldiers for the days in which…
The prison environment is defined as the atmosphere of aspects within a prison, including: inmates, guards, facilities, privileges, morale, etc. A prison environment is strict and isn’t happy. The main goal being punishment, the overall atmosphere will be low, and considering the criminals contained there, not pleasant. The environment affects institutional management and custody because the prisons needs are ever changing, so management and custody procedures must be. Institutional management is there to ensure the facility is run as well as possible. To do this, they must address the needs of the environment of the prison. Custody is also related because if gaps are seen in procedures, management must correct those to protect the integrity and safety of the institution and inmates. To improve the environment, it’s important to improve the morale of inmates. Accomplish this by giving inmates something to work towards, that they are passionate about. This could be education or a hobby. If they have something to take pride in morale will rise and prison environment will follow. Overcrowding also dampens prison environment and can be fixed by addressing which inmates deserve to be incarcerated at any point.…
Thousands upon thousands of children are born into this world each and every day. Many of these children, as they grow up, will not think about the significance of their date of birth. While it may seem that not every day has something significant, after research a different conclusion might be made. If this research is conducted based on past events in history, everyone can find interesting events that have occurred on their birthdays tieing the events together with a significant connection. One of these days that a child was born, September 9th, stands out a as day in history with abounding accounts of violence including Stono’s Rebellion, the Attica Prison Riot, and the murders of eight Syrian soldiers during the Arab Spring.…

Many experts believe the reasoning the United States incarceration rate is so high reflects the "get tough" laws in the 1990s that resulted in strict sentencing for criminals. Prisons contain nonviolent inmates who may be drug addicts and repeat offenders. The “get tough” laws passed when federal and state money was available for the construction of more prisons and was also used to hire added correction officers to supervise the increasing inmate population. Today, these resources no longer exist causing more criminal activity then officers can keep up with. Although there is a rise in inmate population today, staffing in the prison system has decreased which means there is less staff on hand to supervise those placed in the system 's care. Placing criminals inside facilities lacking the staff necessary to regulate proper safety puts hundreds of workers including doctors, nurses, and counselors at risk. Also inmate’s safety is at risk from assaults or attacks by other prisoners.…
This letter is about stopping the human rights violations of severely mentally ill immigrants by detaining them in prisons for an unspecified amounts of time. The Canadian Border Services Agency and the Immigration and Refugee Board are claiming incarceration is being used to prevent “flight risks” or “a threat to public safety”. The effects on the incarcerated are not even considered even though The national institute of mental health status “Most Severely Mentally ill are not violent” and “Most violence is not done by the mentally ill, and are more likely to be the victims”…

Yes, the author is implying that a person is stuck in the cage, by only focusing on one wire you’re not seeing the bigger picture your only focusing on one object. She explains why oppression is so restricting on the oppressed. and that depending on the type of women or person the more barriers she faces, or “wire” on the cage. Your race, gender, ethnicity, etc. All affects this person and makes them feel restricted or trapped in this cage. Like for example a trans-woman of color will have many more “wires” or barriers and threats than others. Because not only will she be harassed because she’s a woman but being transgender and of color will also place her in an oppressed restricted space. You must look at all the wires together to see what…
In an attempt to acknowledge some of the shortcomings associated with the use of force policies and procedures in correctional institutions, this paper will outline several key factors surrounding the topic. First and for most, a discussion of what constitutes use of force in correctional institutions will be evaluated by examining policies of the State of North Carolina Department of Correction Division of Prisons. Subsequent to current policy, an analysis of the different levels associated with using force in a correctional setting will be conducted. Further, an evaluation and examples of excessive force used in a correctional setting will be given. Finally, an assessment of the techniques and technologies implemented to reduce situations…
There are many programs in prisons that are offered to inmates in order to transform them into more progressive beings. The general idea behind this is to change the inmate into a positive, hard-working person so that when they are released back into society they are able to make that transition smoothly and are able to contribute their services to the community. This paper will review previously conducted research on criminal behavior in a constructive…
“Brubaker” was a very interesting film that showed how hard it is to make prison reforms. The new warden, Henry Brubaker, initially enters the prison as an inmate so that he can have a real look at the corruption and ill of the jail. What he witnesses as a prisoner in the Arkansas jail is horrendous. He witnesses an inmate raping another inmate in the dormitory in front of everyone else, abuse and beating of prisoners, and inhumane and unsanitary conditions. There is also a lot of corruption from the prisoners up to the current warden. Food is being taken out of the prison and sold and the prisoners are left to eat scraps. In the movie it shows prisoners cleaning rabbits to eat, and people bidding for certain foods with cash. Brubaker…
In knowing this I will be sure not to repeat this incident I feel the biggest problem is myself I am still trying to adapt to the army life and it is getting a little easier as the days go by I really don’t like being the jacked up soldier and I plan on changing and I plan on doing what I am told when I’m told so I can avoid getting caught up in something I cant get out of. The only way I want out of the army is either with an honorable discharge or to do my time, and I understand that I signed a contract and raised my right hand and made an oath to my country to protect and serve no matter what the cost, so I will do so by obeying all of the article to the best of my ability. I wish to pursue my Army career to the maximum amount of time possible. I hope to do at least 20 years time in service but I will most likely stay in longer. This job makes me feel proud and I really do not want to lose it. Now that I have gotten into trouble I fully understand the severity of obeying an order from the higher ups and I will do my best not to get myself into this predicament again because I would rather not lose what little rank I do have. I can not afford to lose that because I am struggling now trying to help myself with my financial situations and if I was to lose that I’m not sure what I would do to make up that money that I would be losing as of right now E-3 base pay is 1501.20…
