Discussion Question Criminal Justice
• Mandatory: What is probable cause? How does probable cause affect the actions of police? How well do police officers meet the criteria of probable cause before taking action with regard to a criminal activity?

Probable cause is a standard that all law enforcement officers abide by when searching for evidence on a person or their property to get a warrant and make an arrest. Probable cause affects the actions of police because if they do not follow these guidelines they can be reprimanded and the person they are trying to arrest will be let go and the evidence they found could be thrown out of court. Officers have to meet the criteria in order to make the arrest so I would say 8 out of 10 times someone is arrested.

• What is police jurisdiction? How has the historical development of police agencies impacted police jurisdiction? What judgments can you make about police jurisdictions, and what might the future look like in the next 10 to 20 years? Explain.

Police jurisdiction is where enforcement agencies govern where their laws can be enforced an example would be the Sacramento Police department. The historical development of police agencies has impacted police jurisdiction by making it more efficient with deal with certain areas of crime or the legal system by creating different departments of enforcements. In the future due to the growth in population I see cities and county lines expanding which will cause an increase in law enforcement.

• What are the major types of law enforcement agencies? How do these agencies contribute to the Department of Homeland Security? What suggestions do you have to improve the relationship between local law enforcement agencies and the Department of Homeland Security?

• What is the effect on local law enforcement agencies when they are required to enforce federal laws? Provide examples.

    There are two levels of police in the United States: Federal and State.
