Discuss the Role of Technology in Modern Life
The Role of Technology in Modern Life
The concept of technology as a necessity does not come to us as a surprise, since we have been depending on technology for decades. But what are we really using it for? How is it changing the way we live? What are we looking for when we buy a new devise? We will discuss this topics in order to achieve a clear idea of the role technology has in our lives.
Nowadays, we are far away from the days when people complained about technology’s omnipresence, it is a reality. There is technology involved in everything we do and everywhere we go, therefore, it feels like a basic need. We depend on it so much, its absence makes us feel isolated from the rest of the World and we judge people and countries depending on their technology or its lack.
This omnipresence is also partly due to the latest trends in current technology: communication and interconnection. Since the arrival of the Internet, people consider communication on of the most important things and this aspect has become a behemoth. A result of this need for Internet is Wifi; nowadays, if a device does not have wifi signal it is useless because people need to tell everyone what they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A great example of this would be the new televisions with wifi signal, a few years ago –maybe even two years ago– this idea would have sounded stupid, but today it seems fundamental because now the whole family will be able to video chat with a relative that lives abroad from the comfort of their living room and principally because the video chat service is for free.
When we talk about interconnection, we mean that companies are trying to allow a complete transfer of documents, files, and programs between devices of the same brand. Apple is one of the companies that started this, that is why now everybody is using something with the apple logo on. If you have an iPhone then you decide to get an iMac in order to be able to share and store everything, but in a

For many years, some people have believed that there should be a limit to technology use. The author Nick Romeo highlights the main ideas of his article he published on how technology is developing to affect individual’s intelligence. Other people think that technology is actually building us to a smart path and that it saves much time and effort. The author, Andrew O’Hagan has addressed in his article “In Defense of Technology” that technology has made life much simpler and that it had no harm at all. Anyone living today knows the effects technology has had on society today, not to mention how it’s changed our generation entirely. Our generation can hardly remember a time when technology didn’t exist. It’s become a part of our lifestyle, and isn’t going anywhere soon. “The evolution of technology has reached a point where pretty much anything is available at the touch of a button. Shopping, learning, working and entertainment can all be accessed from the comfort of our own homes, on a train or sat in a cafe,” (The Guardian).…

I completely agree with this article that technology makes people oblivious to everything around us and be consumed in our own technology. This article portrays exactly what is becoming of the society with the progressing technological advances. Samuels explains how technology can be a barrier to the outside world, our surroundings, and even our loved ones. He explains his observations in the Borders Café and how the people are so tuned into their technology and there is barely little to any actual social interaction. He continues to say how anyone can make any public setting their own personal space filled with their technology and their business. I was especially interested and could relate to how he couldn’t even go on to the second page of his book because of a woman talking on her cell phone along with her computer turned on and a magazine on her lap. She’s oblivious to her surroundings and has made that table space her own personal office. Everyone around her learns how she had to cancel her appointment on Friday because of her loud phone conversation. Probably not knowing there were people around her she continues to loudly announce her schedule on her device.…

In this generation, technology and society go hand and hand. Technology and human life cannot be separated in the perspective of various people. Society has grown to have a co-dependence on technology. As stated by Fareed ZakAria in his article “How to Restore the American dream”, “technology is not only affecting society, but its creating a better reality. Everything is able to be achieved through ease” (Zakaria 460). In a broader view, we depend on technology for everything. Each individual in the world today uses this new entity in their daily lives. The use has become too great, that most of the time it’s viewed as a habit. The demand for technology keeps on increasing everyday as we use technology to travel, to communicate, to learn, and to handling business but most importantly, to live in peace and comfort. In the article, “Technology & Society: A Canadian Perspective”, the authors said the following about technology. “Technology and Society, we are told exist in a dynamic reciprocal relationship; they act on, and react to, one another” (Goyder and Aant). Without technology society is able to…

The person of the 21st century has the luxury of being dependent on technology, allowing for certain weaknesses to sprout out of individuals due to their lack of natural abilities. Technology is the making, modification, use, and knowledge of tools, machines, or techniques, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal, or perform a specific function. It’s true; technology has made life more efficient and reliable. Many great inventions have been possible through technology. Technology is also one of the causes of people becoming lazier, uninspired, and less creative. Technology is not bad in and of itself, but people are misusing it. Planes, trains, and automobiles carry people from place to place at high speeds. Telephones, television and computer networks help people communicate with others across the world. Medical technologies from vaccines to Stem Cell therapy, allow people to live longer, healthier lives. Although most people think technology made life easier, it’s actually making them overly dependent on those technologies.…

Nanotechnology is actually a fairly new idea. This may not seem like any big deal in terms of ethics, but just like any type of scientific advancement there are positives and negatives. Of course the ethical issues don't stem out of just the fact that this is a new kind of science. It branches off of "what will this new scientific technology be used for?" For example, Embryonic Stem Cell research. It's not the research that's bad it's how they get the cells. There are half a dozen, maybe more, different places to get the same type of cells without taking the life of that unborn child.…
