Discuss the opportunities and challenges for gifted high school students

After secondary school graduations, students can have plenty of choices for their future high schools. Gifted high school is one of these choices of most students. Gifted students not only study amount of knowledge but are also given many opportunities and challenges. So what are opportunities and challenges for gifted high school students? Gifted students have great educational opportunities to move on with their pursuit of lifelong learning. These opportunities include the school infrastructure, the qualified and dedicated teachers and students, and plenty of scholarships to students who strive for excellencies in studying. First of all, gifted schools are great learning environments. The gifted school where I am now studying has many trees, flowers and a large wonderful schoolyard. We can enjoy fresh air in our break time, thank to this green surrounding. The facilities in our school are up-to-dated and respond to the needs of teaching and learning. Secondly, our teachers are experienced, hard- working and professional. They know how to deliver lectures that help students to adsorb lessons easily and turn knowledge into skills. Next, most gifted students are committed to learning and the evidence is that that we all worked very hard to pass the difficult entranced exams. We are also very open-minded to combine knowledge of different problem solving methods passed on to us by our teachers in our major subject. Although most gifted students are considered as excellent, we are not the same. Some students are still better than others. The competition among us to strive for learning excellency therefore exist and one will always work harder to be better than her peers. This practice is positive because students have a chance to compete with each other and to acquaint ourselves with examinations. In that competitive spirit, we develop our ability to cope with stressful amount of work so that when we reach to higher education levels, we will be more self-confident. Finally, scholarships are a great opportunity for gifted students. If some students work hard enough, he or she will be able to win a scholarship from their gifted high schools, from an international fund, or from a non-profit organization, or even from a government. Usually, scholarships are achieved step by step. At first, we gain some scholarships at our gifted high schools. Then, we can gain scholarships from an outside organization to study in a top university. Once, we graduate from leading universities, we are appreciated due to our outstanding studying record. We might be invited to work in well-known corporations, international organizations or national governments. In sum, if a gifted student works hard enough, he or she will see a bright future ahead! However, gifted students also have to face with challenges in gifted high schools. The challenges include pressure from our parents and acquaintances and competitions. Firstly, our parents and acquaintances is also a reason why gifted students are usually pressurized. They usually put much pressure on us to study all time. If our records not satisfy them, they will criticize strongly their daughters or sons, and then they compare us and other better students. Our acquaintances thought that all gifted students are clever, but when they realize that is not true, they will have many bad comments about us. This might well lead to disappointment or despair of student. When feeling that, we must be strong, have belief then stand up and carry on our work. Secondly, gifted students have to face with many competitions, especially the national or international competitions. These are very important to us because competitions can examine students’ levels and abilities. We will have chances to compete with much more excellent students, overcome many difficulties then achieve succeed. The best one is always appreciated and has plenty of marvelous opportunities. Therefore, most gifted students study hard and practice regularly in order to make our dreams come true. With these opportunities and challenges, gift high school students always have chances to prove ourselves to others how mature we are and more grow up after difficulties.

Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm. This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity. Our posts have some similar information about the myths of the gifted student. We both discuss the myth that gifted children are bored at higher rates and they become frustrated with failure. The difference between our posts is that I go on to discuss the truth behind the myths. For example, Bain, Bliss, Choate, and Brown (2007) discuss the lack of evidence around gifted students’ need for perfectionism. In fact, studies show that gifted students’ enthusiasm levels decline in the absence of appropriately matched challenges. Essentially, gifted students would not get bored if they are they are challenged with work that addresses areas where they can learn and grow. The second myth, which states that gifted students can become frustrated when…
