Plate tectonics is the theory that explains the structure and motion of the Earth’s lithosphere. The theory states that the Earth’s crust is split into large sections called tectonic plates, and these move relative to one another creating boundaries at which plates converge, diverge and move past each other. Alfred Wegener pioneered the theory of continental drift in the early 1900s which he supported with multiple pieces of evidence but his theory was never proven due to his lack of a mechanism on how they moved. He said that the pull of the moon (Lunar forces) could move the continents but physicist quickly proved that those forces were not strong enough to move the tectonic plates. Perhaps the earliest indicator of the theory was the apparent fit of some of the Earth’s continents; analysis of these coastlines, notably the eastern edge of South America and the western edge of Africa, first noticed by Sir Francis Bacon in 1620 when the first accurate maps of South America and Africa we being drawn. This suggested that at some point in the Earth’s history the landmasses were joined together. Another indicator that the continents were once distributed differently was geological evidence of glaciation in India – it is unlikely that glaciers could ever reach such low latitudes, but this can easily be explained by continental drift. Fossil distribution also provided some of the earliest evidence for plate tectonics. Glossopteris is a species of fern that can be found in Australia and Antarctica which is another solid piece of evidence that the continents are moving!
Harry Hess was the first person to create a detailed map of the ocean floor using sonar waves from a submarine. In 1912, Alfred Wegner proposed the theory that continents are sat upon tectonic plates and that these plates are slowly drifting around the Earth (continental drift). Since then, volcanic and seismic events have made up a large proportion of the evidence towards the theory, including volcanic eruptions at both constructive and destructive boundaries, hotspots, sea floor spreading, paleomagnetism, and seismic earthquakes.     Plate tectonic theory is a widely excepted theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is made up of plates, both oceanic and continental, which slowly move due to convection currents in the mantle and the asthenosphere. However, it is very hard to be certain as we can’t see the structure of the Earth, so some people do not agree with it. This theory saw the introduction of what we know today to be tectonic plates. Tectonic plates occur where there is radioactive decay in the core and temperatures are extremely high. This decay can occur anywhere in the earth’s core. This results in a plume of magma rising through the mantle creating a thermal current. When this current reaches the surface it spreads through the asthenosphere, before cooling and sinking. These are the convection currents which move tectonic plates. Convection currents will only occur in liquid form and in warm conditions. Tectonic plate theory has evidence to prove that these currents do take place. We know that the mantle is liquid and has high temperatures as magma that originates in the mantle is molten. This means that convection currents can occur. This part of plate tectonic theory is supported by global seismic activity because if convection current did not exist and plates were not able to move, earthquakes would not occur at any plate boundaries, but particularly at collision plate boundaries as there would be no plate movement.…
