Discrimination In The Ku Klux Klan
Discrimination and hate are two words that immediately come to mind when The Ku Klux Klan is mentioned in present day. The Ku Klux Klan also known as the KKK is a modern hate group that believes in white supremacy. Extreme discrimination is put towards anyone not of their own kind. In a country that prides itself in being diverse such a group is allowed to spew their discrimination due to the first amendment of freedom of speech and religion.
The Ku Klux Klan has been in place since the 1800’s It originated in Tennessee in 1865. It was made by confederate veterans that tried to prevent newly freed slaves from getting their life back. The Ku Klux Klans focus is having a caucasian and Christian population (KKK 1). It opposed Blacks, Jews, immigrants, …show more content…
(KKK 1). These years all the way up to the Civil Rights movement was when the Ku Klux Klan was at its peak. It spread like wildfire all the way to Canada (Knapp 1).The violence was country wide and the segregation in the 60’s made it the perfect time for the Ku Klux Klan to get away with violence. The group was mainly feared in the south due to the confederate roots and heavy black communities (KKK 1). The police had hurt the black community brutally and with harm. They allowed the Klan to beat the colored people because they did the same. This crossed the line of just freedom of speech but this was definitely discrimination. More violent acts went down such as blowing up black schools and churches. The Klan got weakened when a lot of court cases happened against them in the 1970’s (Ku Klux Klan 1). Kids are attending these rallies and rituals where they burn crosses (KKK 1). During a rally in North Carolina were the confederate flag was being taken down and not worshiped in the state anymore many of the members protested. A black cop helped a man supporting white supremacy get up and not get crushed by the energetic crowd (Beckwith).
