Introduction
Susan is a business student with a concentration in finance at Mt. Eagle College, who works part-time at an on campus snack bar, The Devil’s Den, which is managed by an external company, College Food Services (CFS).
The employees that are involved in a problem are those who worked the night shifts and on the weekends, who are the college students under the supervision of a student manager. The staff consisted of 30 student employees and 6 student managers. There was a full-time manager employed by the College Food Services, working during the day to supervise the Devil’s Den. Student managers that work at the Den were chosen by the CFS day manager and other student managers from the previous employees and didn’t receive any formal training or written rules beyond what they had learned by working there.
After working for a semester at Devil’s Den Susan noticed that employees were giving away free food to their friends as long as they were taking large quantities themselves when leaving their shifts, which was against the snack bar’s policies. So basically, the food could have been stolen by the employees and customers at any time. Susan determines the reasons for this kind of situation as following: the employee’s wages were low, the access to unlock storage room door was too easy, inventory was very poorly

    Devil’s Den had a contract with the College Food Service (CFS). The employees from the snack bar took advantage of this situation and they got too loose. They took food after their shift and gave to their friends these freebies to. Susan’s colleagues took large quantities of freebies but no one ever checked the storage. The storage room was unlocked all the time and all employees had free access to the food. Customers seemed to know what was going on. This fact was affective on the Devil’s Den image. Students- managers were not responsible at their shift and for the right supervision. Even the theft of the register didn’t seem to be a threat of a job loss to the employee or to the others. The night shift was doing nothing, so the morning shift was obliged to do all the night closing duties in the morning. That was surely unfair for these employees and Susan knew. The manager was very loose with the employees and he didn’t pay attention to any problem that was taken place in the bar on his shift.…

    The following analysis is based on a case of dilemma a girl called Susan is suffering from. Susan is a business student at Mt. Eagle College. She has a part time job in the campus snack bar, The Devil’s Den. There are some happenings which is pricking her at work. The employees were allowing their friends to take free food from the Den and the employees themselves were also taking food in large quantities when leaving their shifts. According to her the main causes of this problem were that the employees were not being paid handsomely, there was easy access to the unlocked storage room door and the inventory was poorly controlled. There was weak supervision by the student managers and there were no written rules or guidelines. The employees who observed this never challenged anyone because they feared the loss of friendship or being boycotted by their colleagues. At work, during the day there were no student managers to supervise, instead a full-time manager was employed by the management to supervise the Den. The attrition rate of employees were high which indicated that the job qualifications and the selection process for getting employed were minimal. The employees were not even given adequate training at work which acted as the icing on the cake. Due to this reason the student employees did not realise their true sense of responsibilities, were inefficient at work and did not take pride in their jobs. The other thing bothering Susan was that the management was unaware of this problem and thus could not take any corrective action for the same. The management had no reported significant losses and had no track of the inventory. Due to this reason Management did not threaten employees with job loss, neither did they provide employees with supervision at work.…
