“Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” is a piece written by Marc Prensky showcasing the difference in the generation who grew up with rising technology and the generation who teach the younger generation. Presnky presents his piece and illustrates today’s students struggle in education dealing with an older generation who did not grow up with technology. This article highlights the reason the educational system is not effective in teaching to the style of the “Digitial Natives”.
Today’s students, dubbed “Digital Natives”, grew up with technology and in doing so, altered their learning and thinking patterns. The way student’s process information is completely different than student’s a decade ago. Digital Natives adapted to the new language

    Toledos counter argument is that the impact that technology has had on students is far more complex than Prensky makes it out to be. Toledo presents other models such as digital recluse, digital refugee, digital explorer, digital innovator and digital addict, each are different models that were put forward after digital natives and immigrants. She suggests that digital immigrant teachers are not completely against technology and would use it in their classrooms if they could see how it would benefit their students. Toledo (2001, pp. 7) Toledo uses a reader’s comment to justify her counter argument because the claim says that the claims Prensky makes are too simplistic and are generalized in saying that all students embrace technology while their educators resist it. Bennett et al reacts to Prensky by saying that his claims are general and the evidence put forward are based on common sense beliefs. Bennett et al believes that not all young people possess the characteristics and skills that are said to be possessed by digital natives. For example, multitasking is said to be a distinctive trait that digital natives possess but Bennett says that this isn’t true because multitasking does not help in the way Prensky says it does.     The first question offered by Mr. Marc Prensky is: Are our youth the digital natives and is the older generation the digital immigrants? I can agree that this, as a statement is, in my mind to a degree, is true. The one statement that I do not believe was cited here by John Palfrey and Urs Gasser, authors of a book titled Born Digital: “Are you a digital native? If you were born after 1980 then you are” (Palfrey & Gasser, 2008). This statement loses me in that when I was a freshman in high school, we all stared at the first iMac and Apple IIe with awe and wonder. No Facebook, no IM, just DOS and not even 3.1.
