When it comes to dairy, there are no good answers that apply across the board. Estimates show that 3/4 of people are intolerant to dairy. If you have any digestive discomfort, or if you've been diagnosed with any other food sensitivities, like celiac disease, it might be a good idea to cut out all dairy in order to heal your digestive system. Having a functioning digestive system is one of the most crucial aspects of health, as your digestion takes the nutrients from your food and turns it into fuel that is usable by your body. We also don't have four stomachs, like baby cows do, and we can't expect to be able to digest something created specifically for baby cows - our digestive systems are too different. Our bodies stop producing lactase (the enzyme to break down lactose) as we grow into adults. BUT the Masai and Loetschental Swiss civilizations, who are free of modern, degenerative diseases, receive a large percentage of calories from dairy products. (Chris Kresser) In areas of the world where dairy has been consumed for thousands of years, it seems that people's genes have been mutated or developed in order to digest lactose better. They argue that this has become such a problem that the FDA limits how many somatic cells can be present inside our milk. The US allows many more somatic cells in our milk than many neighboring countries. The truth is that somatic cells are white blood cells and are not exactly the same thing as pus cells. The number of somatic cells do correlate with the quality of your milk, but it's not the same as pus. And even if they were the same, the amount of somatic cells allowed in your milk would be equivalent to less than 1 drop in a whole cup of milk. You can get the full scoop on the debate
